perhaps this?
neons and/or lime greens are retro. no longer hip. cool. modern. tubular. killer.
however, Obama supports gays (I got nothing against them aswell). stereotypically pink on a guy means 'he's gay', but now that the President supports gays, it's all cool! so the cool doodz can now wear pink, yo!

It was mainly done to add consistency to the colour theme across the forums. Admin groups are red by default, and most of the forum elements are shades of blue. A light green therefore looked out of place. I would have used purple but it can be confused for a visited hyperlink. Pink seemed like a good option, it stands out enough without throwing things off balance.

tidbit offers a slightly different perspective but one I can agree with too.

Pink rocks and it goes with pretty much everything as a neutral color. Hair accessories, lipstick. even shoes. But then most guys find it kind of "girly". And if that doesn't get you guys to change the color I'm a happy camper.

Nearly every sports figure out there as something pink on their uniform, in honor of breast cancer awareness. It is quickly becoming the the new man color.

My discomfort is based not on perception of gender association, but on personal aesthetics. There are certain colors that make me cringe, mostly specific shades of pink and yellow, and while the current shade is not terrible neither is it ideal. :(

Why can't we pick our own colors?

I can't help but remember this quote :

I like polyethene's reasons for changing to pink, it's also a very nice and underused color. However, I would have chosen something more "discrete"/in line with the other user names, simply because I do not think it is usually important to distinguish who's a moderator and who's not.

But the pink doesn't disturb me in general. As for having it next to my own username? I like it.
