Getting a "Failed to start user interface - exiting"  message. Get an icon on task bar - but no ability to open a new *.ahk file  - program does not register.

Dell XP Pro SP3

Any ideas how to fix this - found nothing w/search on this topic!!

Thanks

Larry

Are you referring to AutoHotkey Setup?  Which version are you attempting to install?  What is the exact message?  (Note that you can Ctrl+C at any message box to copy the text.)  The latest version shows one of two messages if it fails to initialize its user interface:

"Setup failed to initialize its user interface and will now exit."

This is only if you are running Setup after installing.

"Setup failed to initialize its user interface.  Do you want to save the AutoHotkey program files?  (You will be asked which folder to save them in.)"

In that case you can save the program files, but the .ahk file type is not registered.

In older versions of the installer, this failure can be caused by restrictive policies related to the Web Browser control and scripting.  However, that should not be an issue with the latest version.  I am not aware of any specific causes, except perhaps a corrupt Internet Explorer installation.

Got this message

"Setup failed to initialize its user interface.  Do you want to save the AutoHotkey program files?  (You will be asked which folder to save them in.)"

Saved the files where they would normally go   programs/AutHotKey/    etc.

Could be related to IE --- what versions are required and must it be default browser ???

Thanks

It should work on any version of IE.  IE does not need to be the default browser; setup just uses the WebBrowser control which utilizes IE.  I have recently tested it on Windows 2000 with IE6, Windows 7 with IE10 and Windows 8 with IE10.

Please download the latest installer and run it.  If it fails, it may show a more specific error code or message.  Please post that here.  It will also provide you with the option to install with default options, which includes associating .ahk files with AutoHotkey.exe.

Alternatively, you can run setup with the /S command-line switch to bypass the GUI and install with default options.  See Installer Options for other switches.
