Yes, I thought of that, but I didn't feel the courage to elaborate...
GM can inject a script that inspects the Dom below the mouse cursor.
One issue then is to communicate the result to the external world, anyway...

perhaps it can send the information to the status bar? or (bad sln.) write to a file!

Hi,
This firefox extension is able to highlight the element under the mouse. I know that probably is quite complex but maybe it can be helpful.

Yes, Firebug, but also WebDeveloper, ColorZilla, Aardvark, to name but a few, but automating these extensions seems very hard... Unless rewriting them...

You don't need a browser extension if you can write a javascript to do it for you.
