Just a quick poll to see what the weather is like out there...

Win 7 is too new, there is no need to rush. Surely there will be tons of security fixes for it when people start to use it.

The question is: is there a real reason to upgrade for the layman? Is there something which win7 does so much better than XP/Vista?

I don't really get why people want to install win7 when their existing system is perfect for the things they use it for? Just to be fashionable or something?

When a reinstall is due then win7 can be considered. Otherwise, it's a pointless exercise.

because win vista the current OS is very dificult for the average user

windows 7 supports a larger base of hardware and is much more user friendly

Yeah, but who's talking about Vista? I'm still on XP and it works pretty well. I see no compelling reason to upgrade.

I see there's no poll option for "Already installed it"...
Neither would I, but obviously not everyone is perfectly satisfied with their existing system.
I saw that "a reinstall is due" a few times during development of Windows 7 (beta -> RC -> RTM).
Where'd you get that misinformation? It has much better hardware support than Vista did when Vista was released, but I suppose that's in large part due to Windows 7's compatibility with many (but not all) Vista drivers.

What dissatisfied you about Windows XP? I'm curious, because there might be a reason for me to upgrade that I haven't thought of yet.

For XP -> Vista, I suppose there were many "small" things that added up, mostly within the UI. Desktop composition played a large part since redrawing artifacts in XP really annoyed me. That said, I never would've decided to upgrade to Vista had I not tried it first (in a dual-boot setup). Vista can be installed and run for a limited time without entering a product key; I suppose the same applies to Windows 7 RTM.

For Vista -> 7, I was motivated by the new taskbar, jump lists, various other UI features and apparent improvements to performance.

I have upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 and currently there are no issues.

I would have chosen "I will only upgrade if I have to" or "I'll try to hold out until Windows 8 (or whatever the next one is called) comes out" if those had been options in the poll.

At the moment I see no point upgrading to a larger, more resource hungry OS that works with less software than XP.

What's the benefit?

over time, XP will be the one that doesn't work with most stuff. already, some things work only on vista+. and everyone seems to love win7, so I expect win7 to be a major focus for devs, not XP and below.

but ATM, I'm still an XP boy, until I buy a new pc and can't find any that come with XP, only win7+.


almost everything now comes with dual or quad core CPU , 2-4 GB ram, and 150GB+ harddrive.
So the hungry cpu OS's on a recent (0-2 years) pc are like a crappy pc running XP.

Although not an exact hit, the "I plan to wait until I get a new computer before going to Windows 7" option pretty much covers this. I too, will not be upgrading until it's time to buy a new computer. By that time, Windows 8 (currently scheduled for 2012) may be out. Most people with computers that are more than a couple of years old probably would be better off not upgrading to Windows 7.

I consider Vista dead ones Win7 was out. It just makes no sense to install Vista ever again. I consider it to be Microsoft commercial beta testing of Win7.

To be honest, its shame it took Microsoft so long to implement such basic features that we have in Win7.

Anyway, the main reasons why I have it are ability to boot VirtualPC images, PowerShell included (still slow starting tho), and no problems with "returning from hibernation" which was making me insane and generally faster start and shutdown.

Some people also tell me that games do work substantially better then on Vista and some claim even better then on XP.

I voted 'I plan to wait a while before installing/upgrading to Windows 7'

I was running the RC, and only downgraded to vista because my stupid prepaid wireless internet card didn't ever connect in Win7. I wasted too many hours tinkering with it. I will install Win7 as soon as I move back to the US early next year.
