Google Offers Peek at Operating System, a Potential Challenge to Windows

Quote:
But with the Chrome operating system, Google is not trying to build a better version of Windows. Instead, it is aiming to shift users toward its vision of “cloud computing,” a model in which programs are not installed on a PC but rather are used over the Internet and accessed through a Web browser.

Cloud computing makes business sense - cost-cutting, flexibility and mobility. But to shift ordinary PC desktop users towards its vision, Google is doing evil. Imagine your private data, photos, videos all moved from your HDD to the "cloud" on which you have no control over its security.

What could be next? It's now easier for big corporations like Amazon to have access to your data for marketing purpose. Some regimes can pass laws to access your data in the cloud for censorship purpose and to curb dissents. There's no more privacy.

Google can very well doom the world as we see it with Chrome OS.

It's a fairly brilliant idea. Nothing on the hard disk except a tiny OS whose only job is to connect to the internet and manage I/O here and there. 7 seconds to boot up! Hard to beat. The rest of the OS and any apps are downloaded from the internet. I suspect that a majority of the programs downloaded from the internet stays on the hard disk forever or until it needs to be updated.

BTW, this is not a new or unique idea. I remember Oracle had a product many years back that did something similar. The time (and the product) just wasn't right.

In Google We Trust

I suspect that if this takes off that other companies will follow. People will go with the company that has the best product. People with privacy and/or censorship concerns will either stay off or go with the company with the best protection. Companies that are lax with privacy and/or allow censorship will quickly die off.

Them be my thoughts...

my current internet connection in germany would make that oh-so-painful. I actuall have certain things I do on my PC locally while waiting for things to load. I also doubt Chrome OS will support my internet stick anyway.

Maybe when I move back to the US, I will try it.

Also, I am part of a group that has a beef with measuring boot times. I reboot so rarely that it doesn't matter to ma as long as it is less than a few minutes.

I don't know any details, but if Google Chrome OS can only boot & run Google Chrome, it will only have limited use (almost no use {only internet & no ABP = useless internet})...if, however, it can boot & run Firefox+ABP & hopefully AutoHotkey, then it will be much more useful...

ReactOS has more potential to overthrow Windows, if they can ever finish it (I know writing an OS ain't easy, but come on guys 10+ years & no stable anything?). I would actually hope Google could dump money into ReactOS or even merge whatever GCOS is with ReactOS...but only if Google don't "trackify" it...Google Chrome (the browser) is pretty useless with all the RLZ tracking...SRWare Iron instead of Google Crome...or actually Firefox+ABP instead any other browser...I just wish Firefox would do this...other than the awful new theme, I think Firefox 4 (with multiple processes) will be great!...if the FOXSCAPE theme will work in Firefox 4...it will be Netscape 4 reborn to render today's web...

With that being said, I still think the people will become the losers. Our current protection against privacy infringement, censorship is that our data lies inside our computer HDD at home. It's hard and expensive for some outsider to access the data of every single individual computers. When the data is uploaded to cloud, it's like putting all eggs in one basket. There is always a price to pay to buy something on the cloud, and a government can afford to pay that price.

I found a news to back my claim.

Quote:
n the summer of 2009, I decided to try and follow the money trail in order to determine how often Internet firms were disclosing their customers’ private information to the government. I theorized that if I could obtain the price lists of each ISP, detailing the price for each kind of service, and invoices paid by the various parts of the Federal government, then I might be able to reverse engineer some approximate statistics. In order to obtain these documents, I filed Freedom of Information Act requests with every part of the Department of Justice that I could think of.

Big companies have a price list for government to buy information from them. If Google's vision materializes, the consequence will be disastrous as far as privacy is concerned.

For those brave enough, you can try the new Chrome OS using a virtual envinronment.

See for example this link on http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/11/19/gu ... chrome-os/

Sure. It was called "a terminal connected to a central server"... :D

Even in our current times were Internet is almost pervasive... there is this "almost". This summer, I was in a French region where Internet was the name for the local fishing company and Wi-Fi was the local accent for those devices making music from vinyl disks...
OK, I exaggerate a bit, but I sure haven't any Internet connection, and was happy to use by good old bloated OS...
