Why don't they use phpBB or another discussion forum, that makes browsing easier with hyperlinks?

Am I missing something?

Edit: I guess they are not so bad.

1. using google site search on mailing list archive sites is pretty easy and fast.

2. the gzipped archives can also be downloaded for importing into emacs rmail or mozilla thunderbird

Actually I've wanted to know this too. Newsgroups is deprecated technology. Nowadays you can choose from many forum software like phpBB, punBB, InvisionBB and even specialized ones for FOSS projects such as trac and redmine if you don't want to use sf.net, google code or other free services.

Certain projects like the kernel, Gnome and their sub-projects use mailing lists because they've been doing so for decades. I don't see why new projects have to copy.

ok, so I started using gnus to browse some mailing lists using gmane with gnus under emacs.


atleast the lists are more accessible in a less painful way now.

I think they use mailing lists to keep even those people who don't check forums up to date. I mean with a forum, unless you're checking every day, it can be months before you find out about a "Critical Update" or some such. Whereas with a mailing list, you get an email in your inbox (which people probably check much more often) within minutes or hours of that update.

I finally started using the solution to the mailing list issue thats been around for a while: google alerts.
It also makes following your own posts around the net much easier...
Not to mention covering the rest of the information globosphere...

Yes. Usually mailing lists have public archives which you can "browse with hyperlinks".

Also, gmane.org provides you several ways to read such lists. Blog format, NNTP, RSS, etc.
