Nothing prevent you to install Stylish (or use user stylesheets) and customize the site to your tastes... Perhaps there are probably lot of scripts for similar forums.
Perhaps less convenient than a set of provided skins (for the non-CSS savvy) but more flexible... :)

Or use a local proxy like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxomitron and change any website the way you want.

There are some things you can do right now.

I don't know, to me its easier and quicker to setup a new forum all together than to use any of that :P

Example: 30 minutes and I have This demo board up and running, style installed, user permissions set, and a nice looking logo from this thread installed.

This still has some security stuff that this community doesn't want, like CAPTCHA for guest posts, but it is a fully functional site with an updated look & feel within the first hour of me getting out of bed.

Hell, I would volunteer my time to get an updated site for AHK built. Im not all that artistic, so logos and such would have to come from other people, but I am comfortable with the phpBB system and mod installations/tweaks.

The site as it is is functional, no arguing that, but it is bland and looks very old compared to most other sites out there.

We are scripters/programmers. We are the people that make computers do what we want them to, we should flex that a bit and have a NICE site to accompany our NICE scripting language :D

(Deep down I know that this will likely never happen, as nobody "important" seems to care enough that it looks like we are stuck in 2001)

If that would be a valid argument developers would dress like supermodels, right? Right! The people you're talking about are working for the marketing department. Selling bubbles. Nice looking useless content.

Form follows function 8)

What happened to the phpbb v2 style this forum uses? I prefer it over anything... :(
Maybe an option can be added to change styles?

fincs, that style is available (with a small face lift for the BB3 system), under the control panel on my demo board, you can select three styles currently.

The default that I have set is Serenity Green. Prosilver and subsilver2 (the BB2 style) are both selectable, though I don't have logo's for those styles set yet.

Murx, supermodels dress nice because that is what they are good at. We should have a nice site because we are good at computer programming and scripting. THAT is the logic you should have followed there.

AHK has a well rounded and powerful "function", yet our "form" is old and bland, so no, our form is not following our function in my opinion.

Indeed. In fact, are there any admins that frequent the site?

Your demo forum looks really nice btw. MUCH better than what there is now, with a limited amount of work. I prefer a couple of the other logos better myself, but that doesn't really matter. Top notch.

A thousand times this. When I first joined this community and started playing with ahk, I was initially put off by the site itself. The program, from everything I read was exactly what I wanted, and the community I saw involved here made me believe that I could get help and support whenever I needed it. But there was still a twinge of, "ok, but if ts as awesome as it seems, why does it have a lame/old site design?" It felt like I might be walking into an old, abandoned project, not the one that is so obviously full of life as I now realize.

I have a couple mods done using GreaseMonkey for FireFox.
I've installed the scripts:
Hide forum user details till hover (this hides all info below the username till you hover your mouse over that section).
PHPBB Minimal Theme Dark Mod (tjW) - (This is decent, but will need some modding for the images that have a white background [ie - top AHK logo and logos next to FAQ, Search, Memberlist, etc] and a couple other modifications aswell.

When and if I ever have some time to work more on these themes, I'll definitely post a link to the release on user-styles.org for everyone, but it might take me a little while to complete it as I've been quite busy with plenty of other things.
