I just use a plain text file. For me mind maps are just a fancy name for hierarchical lists...

I used a couple of mind-mapping software before, all of them coded in Java. So far I find Freemind is the best because mindmaps in Freemind are more compactly presented. You can squeeze lots of words into it. It is also faster.
