I noticed Lua was mentioned in this thread. I recently started looking at Lua because it's supposed to be one of the fastest scripting languages (please correct me if I'm wrong). I also stumbled across Idle, which to my understanding is based on Lua. Has anyone else used this language, and would you recommend/not recommend it :?: The Module win32 seems to provide some of the nice features that are available in AHK.

Hmm, I checked out the languages mentioned in this thread and was pleasantly surprised at the ease with which good looking gui could be created with Gui4Cli. Free, open-source, and small-sized (< 5 MB) too.

Maybe not suitable for the kind of stuff we regularly do with AHK but certainly looks interesting. Doesn't show signs of recent developments though.

I have used it to make a Gui for some command line tools (Gui4Cli...) and it surprised me how easy and fun it was.
I had seen it years ago but did not look at it because it looked old and a little strange language syntax but after i tried it i started to like it.
AHK is faster, 64bit support, a lot more functions and (hot)key/window support etc. but making a Gui is easier in Gui4Cli (has nice splitter attribute, quickmenu).
I use them both (need more time...) to have fun with both.
In the Gui4Cli Mailing list the latest version is 19.33 of Jan 17 2010.

I totally agree to that. The main emphasis is on creation of top of the line Gui. We can even make great interfaces for other programs as described in the home page:

Gui4Cli is a powerful, Open Source, event-driven language for easily creating many types of GUIs (user interfaces, windows, dialogs etc) to use as stand alone programs or as interfaces for other programs. It is easy and extendable with many powerfull commands and a simple intuitive structure.

Good to know that we have another small-sized open source program (written in C with a little C++) with great utility. Also, it's great that active development has not stopped as I'm all for open source. Thanks for helping me discover it - though it has been mentioned (even by Chris) in this forum for quite some time. :D

If one had to learn web programming to make web app like shopping cart mlm apps which one to go to : php/mysql, ruby, asp, c#, c++, vb, other ?

It seems that c#, c++, vb, now, since 2010 version, give the option to make web app too.
