I figured that most will be switching or at some point using W7.
If you find any little helper programs or built in features that are hiding under the hood
post them here and explain the(ir) usage ( if you want to )..

Heres some simple ones that might make your day easier:
    - Press WinKey + X to bring up Windows Mobility Center ( great for presentations etc., also aval. in Vista I think ).
    - Press+Hold WinKey+Tab ( shift = modifier ) to scroll windows in 3D ( DWM service must be on ) !
    - Click here for better network sharing mini tut.
Short list for now,
feel free to add anything that you find!

Thanks

If anyone finds a way to do things in Win7, that are SIMPLE in XP, post those.

For example...getting to a network connection's "Status" dialog...
    XP
      find icon in systray, click (or right-click -> Status), simple.
    Win7
      ???...find icon in systray, click the icon, get a useless window thing, click Network & Sharing Center, click something in that window & the "useless window thing" pops up again (endless loop), click, click, click & maybe get the status window. Option 2: find icon in systray, right-click: nothing useful, no "status" item.
Also, in WinXP you can Press Win+Break to get a dialog with all kinds of useful info & settings. In Win7 you get a window (not a dialog) with perhaps useful info, but not what you were expecting, with no indication of "how to get that dialog I can get in XP". All the options are written for "normal users" not "power users"...like changing the DPI setting is called "Make text on your computer easier to read"...or some other long-drawn out, non-technical way to avoid saying "DPI".

Darn... I can't believe after all these years this is the first I've heard of Win+Break, especially with all the times I've read articles about Windows keyboard short-cuts. Thanks for posting this!

Thats because its been replaced with the much simpler connections display

;)
IMO its much better than XP connections icon and I still use both everyday.
Well maybe better in W7 for the wireless aspect..

...that's exactly what I referred to as the "useless window thing" (cuz I didn't know what to call it). Now, as you can see, it's mildly useful for Wireless Network Connections (still can't get the Status dialog tho), but post a screenshot of what it looks like for a Local Area Connection, no info, nothing to click for more info/details/status. But, in any case, how do you get the Status dialog (easily)? It would be fine if clicking something in that window would get me the Status dialog, but nothing does. Not even right-clicking the connection icon (in the systray) gives me a Status menu item.

Right click network icon in taskbar
Select "Network and Sharing Center"
Select option on left "Change adapter settings"
double-click any of the adapters there to get the status dialog.

Granted it isn't as quick as it was in XP, but after doing that 2-3 times, you should be able to get there quickly and without really having to think about it anymore.

Also: "God Mode"
Quote:
To use it:

Create a new folder.
Rename the folder to GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} (note that you can change the “GodMode” text, but the following period and code number are essential).
The folder icon will change — double click it to show the GodMode window

God Mode is essentially a single window that contains most of the possible options and features settings in Windows Vista & Win7 (This may crash x64 Vista, but works fine on 32 and both versions of 7 )

Thanks Elesar, when I made my post above I couldn't think of the steps so I said "click, click, click"...but that is the steps I found 1st, list the adapters, then get status from them. Also, more recently I found about a 3-click solution...click systray icon -> Open Network & Sharing center -> Connections: Local Area Connection...about 1-click less that listing all adapters 1st.

...thank you evan1, that does work for Wireless Network Connections (don't have one on my Win7 for testing...or I would've likely found it)...can you try to find the same thing for Local Area Connections? That's exactly what I want, something to right-click on & get Status/Properties.

you can hide/show notification area icons simply by dragging the selected icon with the left mouse button - up to hide and down to show.

Anyone know how to move the 'show desktop' button on the lower right?
Image
I'm use to having it on the left as a quick launch 'shortcut' in XP..
Image
hrm, wonder if the class is the same...

edit:
Ok using the same info seems to work in win7..
Code:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop
Save as 'show desktop.scf'.

Now just gotta figure out how to place or 'pin' it in the taskbar ;)
I'm still open to suggestions for moving the new w7 button..

Tryed turning off AeroPeek, no luck..

The new positioning of the show desktop button is more ergonomic, you just have to move the mouse to a corner of the screen without needing precision. The way it used to be required you to find the icon and click at a very precise spot.

In addition to a lot of the keyboard shortcuts available for Windows 7 like:

Win+Up -> Maximize
Win+Down -> Minimize
Win+Left -> Left justify
Win+Right -> Right justify

I accidently found that if you have icons pinned to your taskbar, you can activate them via Win+1-9.

Pretty pointless if you ask me. But, it was cool to figure out.
