We have no reason to dictate one's level of anonymity in any manner, even if it is a rather weak method.

They can always change it. I merely meant in the username field, instead of it defaulting to 'guest' it defaults to 'guest{rannum}'. They could always manually change it to whatever they want.

I guarantee that more than half of the 'guests' posts on here are not from them wanting to remain anonymous but simply from the laziness of typing anything in.

You do realize that this defeats the purpose of your stated intent?

This would solve the case where multiple guests post in the same thread and others can't discern which is which.

If the user can optionally change the number anyway, forcing a number onto the end of their anonymous title would be pointless.

This would be the purpose.

That's not a purpose, that's a reason that supports your purpose.

Really, using numbers is not a good idea. You may produce more trouble than you solve:

IP Adresses typically change daily, somethimes even more often, and this would result in defining new numbers for the same person. Eg. the system fools itself.

+1
Just leave the user name field empty and force the guest to type anything. I think there is a bit of a chance that he will type the same next time, even if the guest is a lazy one...

I have not read the thread fully yet. Sorry if this was suggested already. I would suggest that guests have to choose something different than guest as name. At the same time, they shoukd be dissallowed to choose any registered nickname.

...Guests are already disallowed from using an exact registered nickname...that's a default built-in to phpBB.

I agree, just force them to use something other then Guest. Still anonymous but helps in determine who is posting when more then one Guest is posting on the same thread.

Rather, anonymous posts should be disallowed at all and everything's fine.

Guests should be allowed to post. It works suprisingly good. Otherwise, we lose many users who are not willing to register. What we try here is just fine tuning this good working concept.

@Guest
You write as a guest and I do it so now... and still want disallow guest postings?

On the other hand, silently we lose registered users who expect continuous relationships rather than just instant information exchanges. There are some who use forums to built their personal networks and there are secret techniques shared only with trusted ones.

As I pointed out previously in this thread, guest posts in a serious discussion really damage mutual respects and affect other members who are participating it. Think about there are two opposite opinions and discussing each other and an anonymous guest appears and insult one of the members. It's hard for the insulted side to not imagine that the debating person is doing it to discourage him to continue the discussion.

Yes, even disallowing guests, it's possible to create multiple accounts for one person but the system doesn't have to encourage guest postings. My compromised suggestion is that allowing guests only in the ask for help forum.

I think you lack some imaginations.
