This thread was created just before all the recent discussions with guests. well, before it became another huge endless argument with guests (again). I also don't see how it's destructive.
Anywho, this thread is good-intentioned as you said. But...

how people use it is up to them.
    Rage quit?
Announce them going on vacation for a month?
    Leaving for the Military?
Just want a break from the digital world and enjoy life?
    Etc...

I doubt tank's post would have been made if not for this thread. Luckily, he is still posting, but I would be quite sad if someone as intelligent and helpful as he is took this thread as an opportunity to leave the community forever.

I hope you don't misunderstand our comments tidbit, nothing wrong with the topic as such. It's a nice and respectful thing, and you listed a few good examples.

It has been good to know why Drugwash is gone, Tuncay going Linux, etc. All previous posters who take time off will be missed, but I'm glad I'll know a reason and have had a word from them - rather than simply missing out on their presence without warning.

Ah well, let's not dilute the thread all too much. Point is: Good topic, too bad even people who weren't (at least as it seemed) considering leaving before, may have seen reason to make a decision to take time off (even if not 5 years, hopefully).

Reason: life is sometimes sporadic

This is mostly a "I'm not dead yet" post. I have spurts of time where I can come to the forum and help out for a few hours a day, and then I have sections of time where I don't open the AHK help file. I'm glad I have missed most of the arguments about guests. For work I can occasionally write an AHK script, which usually brings me back for a week or so, but then life gets busy again, and I have to go do other things. At the moment, I'll probably have free time again sometime in March.

Reason: ungrateful coworkers

Hey guys, I am a little sad to see what's going on here. AHK has been my first attempt at programming and I had a lot of fun learning from you guys.

I was creating a program for work since March 2011, I received a lot of help from people in the chatroom, so that is why you may not have seen me around much in the forums. While I am happy with the work I did, old habits die hard here and the people here prefer to do everything the manual way, sigh. What can you do, right?

Although I am disappointed by its reception at my current job, I will be moving to new job very soon, and even though it is not an IT job, I hope to create something useful that will make that workplace a better place than it was before. I am also considering to partner with a coworker on our local IT company in Queens(that's from NYC, maybe you've heard of it) and I am hoping to create wonderful applications for local businesses. I am safe in this regard considering that most small businesses still cling on to Windows XP anyway. :)

What really disappoints me though is that AHK_L didn't get much of a chance; I was converting my program at work into a more OOP framework. I found it hard to learn, and the access to help was limited.

One thing that bothered me at times was watching people give people crap for being a beginner. I am part of Livemocha, which is a site to learn languages(not those languages, REAL languages, lol) and the people there are very helpful as a community. But if that site had the same general attitude towards learners as we have it here, it would not even be in business anymore. It astounds me that the programming community can get away with such disdainful attitudes towards learners, but for any other discipline, it is taboo to do such a thing. I guess that is just part of 133t subculture; kind of immature though.

plastikglass, I agree. When I started learning AutoHotkey, when I posted a question even with my attempt, I get replies like, read the manual, we are volunteers so beggars have no choice but listen to what we say and accept our tough love. I even saw others are called, moron, idiot, go away, monkey with a keyboard and such.

And as my skill gets matured, I've started to realize those who are acting like advanced users don't have much skills as they talk. And they don't post questions in Ask for Help but post in General Chat and get answers from other posers. Such sneaky manner just dropped my respects towards them dramatically. If somebody posted something bitter to them, they call the poster a troll.

This community is not beginner friendly for sure and I agree that it's part of internet subculture that some weak beings in real life can express themselves and feel like they are part of the society. That's not necessarily a bad thing but could be annoying for an ordinary user like you. And please remember that there are real nice people in this community and I often observe real skilled ones are all very humble and amazingly nice on the contrary to the mentioned posers.

Anyway, good luck in your new job.

@plastikglass
I guess I've just been lucky but I've not had nearly that much trouble getting answers on this forum. In fact for me it's been the opposite. I owe so much of my, meager, programming ability to users on here that I feel like I should give back. Writing tutorials and helping guests or new users with simple questions is one way I'm able to do that.
In fact I have a hard time thinking of examples of people that outright call out new users and harass them for not reading the tutorial. Not that it doesn't happen.
Anyway hope you adjust to your new position well. But some advice. Attatch a $ savings report and efficiency gain and shorter handle time to your projects and managers / supervisor's will eat out of your hand. Some of the projects that I've put together at work save the company somewhere in the 400 grand anually area and I make dam sure my superiors know it. It's all I can do to keep them from pushing new projects on my plate.

My bad, maybe it came off as me painting the whole community that way, but let me just state that there are a lot of talented and helpful people here. I know this because without them, I wouldn't have been able to accomplish what I did at my job.

@Mickers, I think your web and excel automation tutorials are great, keep it up! I want AHK to thrive and keep growing because I think it is an excellent tool to get things done in a much faster way. I believe it because it has automated so many things at my own job to the point that it made my life so much easier. I really hope that this won't be the end of AHK, there is so much more to explore!

For the AHK experts, I hope you know that it is important to support your craft. It would be a shame if AHK were to die because we didn't give it enough support; I can't think of anything worse in terms of individual development than an obsolescence in your skills.

Well if you look at my first few posts (I rarely posted questions after the first ~5 or so, but you might be able to find them) you'll see me asking questions and getting great, helpful answers. So I guess I disagree.

It wasn't a very scientific statement on my part, but I just wanted to say that such an attitude has been apparent when dealing with learners. Even a substantial few can ruin a project like this because I feel that the greatest asset that AHK has is getting non-programmers interested in scripting, and making AHK their number one choice.

First I wish to say that I have always received great support here. I haven't posted that much, but I recognize the names of most of the frequent posters around the forum. Perhaps my problems were not always solved, but what do you expect?

Secondly, I think the best way to deal with negative behaviour is to ignore it—if you will forgive me this little preterition. Don;t let people you don;t care about spoil your fun!

Thirdly, people, don't leave please!

P.S. I keep typoing that damned semicolon...oh, d'oh, I forgot to turn on my AHK auto-correct script! Long live AHK, I can;t even type any more without it!
