You may know locate and updatedb from *nix, or the nice Locate (for DOS and Win), here is a version for Windows:

locate32 homepage

Somewhat a mixture of Agent Ransack and Cathy. Very fast, and very complete.

Thanks for the link. Using Agent Ransack a lot, and Cathy to manage my CD-Roms of freeware archives, I was curious to see it.
Well, the page is a bit terse, I don't see a reason to try it over Cathy...
And it won't replace Agent Ransack, as I use it mostly to grep strings (on frequently updated files).

Anyway, I tried her Clipboard Viewer X, to see if it is better than the quite primitive ClipSpy.
I was upset to download a 504KB installation program to get a 232KB program. I hate that! I avoid installations whenever I can.
Anyway, once I get used to the rather clumsy user interface, it seems nice and flexible, so I will keep it.

Locate is THE choice in the Total Commander forum, we even wrote an Autohotkey script to intergate TC with it! Check it out if interested :-)

If you are looking for a good alternative to ClipSpy, try CLCL!

Hi PhiLho, thanks for taking the time to try and report.

A couple of remarks:

- I like the fact that it can search in files (like Agent Ransack), and has this option also for the generated databases/catalogues (Cathy can only find filenames).

- I also like that it doesn't crash (so far), when using the contextual menu in the results (Agent Ransack crashes a lot when using right-click menu for me).

- It may not have all the options Agent Ransack has, you can however do some specific searches. The third tab 'Advanced' offers some, like 'Replace spaces with asterisk', which probably means you can use (some) wildcards in your searches (documentation is poor).

- It's a beta, and I did have troubles adding CDs to the databases, but I think this could be a worthy replacement for (or addition to) Agent Ransack/Cathy, and ofcourse the excellent 320MPH Script

A program I use is Visual CD:
"Visual CD is a disk cataloging tool to index CD/DVDs, floppy disks, hard disks, and even folders".

http://boozet.xepher.net/viscd/index.htm

I find it very handy for indexing backup cds/dvds and even external hard drives. A couple of features I particularly like are being able to search across multiple catalogs, password protecting catalogs and being able to export the catalogs as txt, rtf, csv or html.

@SanskritFritz: I use CLCL, but it is not the same thing as ClipSpy, which is just a tool to visualize the various contents of the clipboard.

@not-logged-in-daonlyfreez:
- Nice that it can search inside files, but the reason why I use ARansack a lot is the capability to show the found lines, à la grep. Extremly useful while searching a bunch of source code files.
- ARansack doesn't crashes for me, so it is OK. I use to use the context menu and drag'n'drop to open the found files.

CLCL does show all CF_ formats as well, some of them in native format (rtf, bitmap, metafile) (extendable with plugins!)

Oh yes, I forgot that! Thanks for reminding. This is indeed a very nice little program.

I was looking for something like: Agent ransack (thanks PhiLho and freeware is awfully attractive!! )

my apps/scripts is getting to a stage where it is unmanageable using conventional means(files/folders).

I personally used grep/agrep/gsar exclusively but sometimes I just like the listview esp when theres 1000 matches.. :P
