| Is anyone here familiar with Mozilla Firefox's "find as you type" feature? Would it be possible to emulate that so for instance if I am in a word processing program or any other program that deals with text, I can type / or ' as a trigger and the cursor will go directly to any word or phrase I key in subsequent to the trigger. There would also need to be a "time out" so if I don't key anything in after say 3 seconds the trigger expires. Is any of this possible? Thank you! |

| Search for "firefox" at the forum and if urgent have a request directly by sending a PM. |

Is it specifically for a different browser, or just a general system-wide find-as-you-type? I certainly hope you're not using the Infernal Exploder (IE), 'cause then I'd have to rant and nobody wants that. |

I don't see what the big deal about Opera is. It seems to have become the de facto for Firefox haters. I tried it once, and I simply didn't like it. Mozilla's just fine (it's the one I use most), Firefox is cool, but less stable, and Opera is fine too, but IMO still below both the Mozilla browsers. Of course, literally anything is better than IE.

After thinking a little bit, this actually sounds like a nice idea. I'll look into it. |

The big deal abt opera is that it is more customizable and has more feaures than firefox or mozilla @3.6 mb without needing any extensions
how customizable, i hear u ask : a small example
give it a try jonny and u r always welcome at the awesome opera forums
lets not started abt the browser wars as v can hav a 100 page debate abt this , but ofcourse u r free to ask any Questions regarding opera |

I hear you about the "browser wars."
I guess I'll just leave it at 1) I have tried it before, 2) I happen to like the extensions.
After all, that's all it really boils down to: preference. That's also why Microsoft sucks. They try to take away your choice and make you get their software. Too few wonder why 100% of people who buy Windows also buy IE. (Yes, buy... I have a rant ready, beware) |

true, its a matter of preference, but remember many ppl tell me to shut up' and use IE coz its their 'preference'.
just a last note: opera can be used completely with the keyboard (customizable) . |

GAAAAH! I'm so sorry, but I couldn't resist that last note. I currently have no problem using firefox without a mouse. There are extensions to make it completely keyboard, with emac-esque bindings, but I find it easy to use as is.
Sorry, sorry, I won't say any more! |

exactly! opera has it without extensions by default + its customizable.
last tiny tine bit :
i didn't know abt emacs, so i double clicked emacs and a menu poped up,i seleted a dictionary search and then a google search.(this is also changeable)
best of luck with 'find as you type'(again invented by opera) by the way |

Hey, I have a question about Opera before I go... it is freeware, right? I can't even remember now, it was a long time ago I was trying different browsers.

1) You're breaking the rule of preference. (me likey extensions, you not)
2) I already use it almost completely with my keyboard, I don't have the Conqueror extension. I was just using an example.

You sure about this? Anyway, FF has link searching built in, and before you shout out 'bout the spatial thingy, I might note that it's covered by several extensions.
One small note: I consider all working, stable extensions to be a part of Firefox in talks about functionality. And again, I still believe in preference and choice, so you are fully entitled to your opinion, and the only browser I want gone is IE. [opinion]Opera's cool, Firefox (my main XP browser) is cooler, Mozilla (main Linux browser) is stable and reliable.[/opinion]
P.S. Sorry for reviving, people! If you're not interested in this topic, don't read it!

The browser war aside, there is also this freeware: HandyFind http://www.handykeys.com/
Looks like it will mostly work in M.S. apps
"Anywhere that uses the Microsoft web browser control 5.0 and higher (for example Internet Explorer, MSN, and the Windows help system)
Anywhere that uses the standard edit control (for example Notepad, WordPad, Outlook emails, editable combo boxes like the address bar, the fields in the file properties dialogs, and other typical text displays). " |
