I've seen "slider" used a lot, and it seems more meaningful and memorable. However, trackbar is probably a more "official" name for it.

If you go by the number of search hits, Slider is used at least 10 times more than Trackbar.

I did check that but unfortunately slider has many generic meanings completely unrelated to Windows/controls. By contrast, trackbar doesn't have many other meanings. Thanks for voting.

I think TrackBar is better. Slider is a part of trackbar.

That's a good point. On a whim, I searched MSDN for "slider". In spite of the confusion it might cause, it seems that MS uses both terms as shown in this quote:
Quote:
A slider control, also called a trackbar control, lets a user select from a range of values by moving a slider. The volume controls in the Windows operating system are slider controls. The window class name for a slider control is TRACKBAR_CLASS

Maybe both names should be allowed synonymously.

i voted for slider...though trackbar is fine too... but using both for smae control is not recommended... the other might still be usable for some other control i future. Smile

Right. I saw the same thing. That, and based on number of hits, is why I voted for Slider. Slider, I think better describes the use of the control. Yes, it does ride on a track, but you "slide" the control, across the track. That's my take on it...

I do think that Trackbar would be better.
Slider is used for so many things, inside and out of computers.
But having a Bar that Tracks user input sounds to me like a track bar. When i hear slider I think of those good old walkmans with the volume control is a sliding piece of plastic. Very Happy

It looks like Slider wins. Even so, I appreciate all the comments about why TrackBar is a better choice.

The only decision now is whether trackbar should be allowed as a synonym for slider:

That seems pretty unlikely in this case, but you're right that having a synonym might add more confusion than its worth. Perhaps sticking to slider is the best.

Voted for slider, seems more meaningful. Trackbar didn't sound appealing to me enough.
