With this script, you'll hopefully be able to read a text very fast. It scans every word in the clipboard and displays it at the same spot in the GUI. That way, your eyes do not lose focus like in a usual text and the frequency of words can be very high.
I got the inspiration for this script from the Zap Reader web page.
http://www.zapreader.com/

The GUI is very straightforward:
Overview of the clipboard text:

Reading mode:

Features:
1. It reacts to a text block copied to the clipboard
2. It stops a bit longer at the period marks
3. Pause reading by pressing, well, the Pause-key
4. Abort reading by pressing the Esc-key
5. It counts the number of words in the clipboard
6. It gives an estimated reading time for 3 reading speeds

The Script is posted at: http://www.autohotkey.net/~noutters/SpeedReader.ahk
The exe is posted at: http://www.autohotkey.net/~noutters/SpeedReader.exe

Cheers,

noutters

Hello noutters

I have just tried your SpeedReader script...

and its very nice, I do like it Smile

I think that you can double or even triple the speed though and still comprehend what you are reading. Even on fast it is too slow, the words should just flash by. Maybe 200, 400 and 600 wpm would be better??

I haven't tried Zap Reader, but I do have Ace Reader which is, I would assume, very similar.

I will be watching this thread for any updates (so get cracking Smile )

After running the script the first time and then copying new text to the clipboard the "Number of words" and "Read time" are updated, but the text displayed by the script is not. Correction the new clipboard text is displayed only if the scripts GUI is not active.

wow how interessting and cool.

The speed should be entirely adjustable by the user, and also should have the option for more words at a time (like zapreader-at least up to 3, i foudn this helped me greatly, as we save time by reading in context).

AHK, I can not reproduce this behaviour if the clipboard contains less than 10 ords. Otherwise, it works fine. I have set a threshold of 10 words under which the GUI does not react.
This issue is now fixed. You'll be a happy with the coming release.

In the next release, you will be able to select how many words should be displayed, and of course, faster reading speed. It seems some users can read *much* faster than I do Wink but I like to actaully 'read' and not only get 'what the text is about'.
Well, in any case, stay tuned for the next release that sould be more polished. Very Happy

I agree, nice script! If you could bring it closer to function like http://www.zapreader.com/ (and maybe even a little bit better) I'd use it!

Online, I love to be able to control it completely with keyboard shortcuts, like faster, slower, pause, jump one sentence back.

I hope you'll find this new version of SpeedReader more polished than the initial one.
I changed the GUI and provide a slider for the reading speed. Up to 1000 wpm for *VERY* fast readers Razz
Change the speed (wpm) with your mouse wheel.
Pause to pause, esc to abort as usual.
The user may select to see 1, 2 or 3 words at a time.

Snapshot:

The URLs of the source and the compiled exe are unchanged.

Cheers,

noutters

Hi, The program is implemented good.

But actually it reduces my reading speed Wink as you cant read diagonal with this and have "to wait" for every word move by.

This might be interesting:

even the claim "read 3 times faster" is the same *lol*

Oh, i bought the book here (german version) for about $20. But they already tell the "secret" on their website.
http://www.photoreading.com/howdoesitwork.asp

There are only these 5 steps and they really work. you dont need to attend these courses for $245. They only try to make a living, and give courses for those needing more help to understand it.
I dont use it in that "complicated" manner but nevertheless get a benefit of it.
My simplified version is to
1) get a question what to search for
2) glance over the table of contents
3) read fast over the headlines , but view the page as a whole (the photo part)
4) after a while i read some parts again, and its much easier to understand as i have this background knowledge of the whole thing.

At some points there are similaries with speedreading (or its a part of the photoread "workflow") as it simply works and is better than reading word by word, as your mind can read faster than you allow it Wink

Nevertheless the book gives you much details and you understand better "why and how" it works. but all you need to "use" it are the 5 steps.
like you dont need to know how an engine in a car works in order to drive, you only need to turn the key and pull down the pedal. (but for some its fun to understand how engines work and tweak them , similar with your mind Wink

I dont want to advertice this company but share the idea of photoreading as it accellerated my way of learning things really a lot. there are many books about this topic an they are not that expensive. but you get a lot of them as you save a lot of time while reading (or can read more in the same time)

Another way to give your thinking and problemsolving a boost is:
http://www.start2think.com/index.html
(this is no-nonesense as also "ford-company" uses this technique)

Speedreading and Photoreading are totally different approaches of Quickreading Smile

Generally Photoreading consist from:
1) Preview Part.
Apart from glancing over the Contents, it's adviced to view also the Index too, select the Keywords you're interested in.
2) Leaf 1 Page per Second. Trust your subconsciousness.
3) Sleep.
The mind needs incubation period to make ties on a molecular level.

4) Ask yourself something, create a mindmap, review the whole book quickly (the speedreading part) just to be sure that you absorbed the book contents and to expand large blocks of texts to the conscious mind. The 4th point is necessary only in the beginning of photoreading sessions, until you'll fully trust to your implicit mind capabilities.

Photoreading was invented 25 years ago.
