However, there are some ways that money could be helpful:

1. It could be used as prize money for the winner of a poll.

For instance, the most useful "script" or "scripts" for 2007. There could be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

There could also be a vote for contributing to the AutoHotkey source code.

2. Perhaps it could be setup to donate to registered AutoHotkey scriptwriters at AutoHotkey.net

3. It could go to renting C++ programmers to implement difficult AutoHotkey solutions.

Those are some nice ideas worth thinking about IMHO.

Regarding 3.: professional programmers could maybe also be used to optimize parts of the AHK code itself at times.

I think the polls only allow 10 choices...It would be super difficult to pick the 10 best scripts, let alone the 1 best.

Or to get rid of all of the AutoIt code.

That is a good idea.

It would probably take several weeks full-time, and several months part-time (part-time is all I would do). In addition, in at least one case (the GNU strcasestr() function) it would probably reduce performance. (But that function is "GNU Lesser GPL", so maybe that helps.) "

while rest of the code is highly optimized, AutoIt code is much slower.

Do your research, everyone knows AutoIt to AHK is like Java to Assembly.
Point besides it also gives Chris the freedom to change the license of the program to something less restrictive such as BSD.

You could do this by author, as oppose to script. 10 script authors could be nominated and then placed on the poll. You would list the scripts the author made, but vote for the author and not the script.

You could even do this as eliminations with semi-finals. Then put the last 10 in the finals.

There is nothing wrong with it as AutoIt (and ScriptIt in an inspirational way) were the basis for creating AutoHotkey.

The argument is more that AutoHotkey has outgrown it's AutoIt roots. As time goes by its more and more divergent. The difference in the languages at this point is highly significant.

Possibly focusing on eliminating AutoIt code, could provide more freedom for AutoHotkey in terms of design and licensing.

However there will always be some relationship with AutoIt, because they are both automation languages. The code elimination would be more for giving AutoHotkey more options.

So if donations went into a project to eliminate AutoIt code, I think many would support it.
