As my scripts get longer I get lost in variables and comments and would really appreciate seeing them coloured!

So what do you guys recommend?

There are already several similar topics. Should we repeat all the given opinions in this one?

I use Notepad++ , mainly because it's free and it has an Ahk syntax file. That would provide the coloured syntax you want.

But text editors are a highly personal choice, so try out 2 or 3 others before picking your favourite.

Yes, of course, a base choice would be among the editors supported in AutoHotkey\Extras\Editors, ie. having syntax files ready to use.
Lemming is right, there are almost as many editors as there are freeware developers, because everybody has an idea of what the ideal editor should be.
And no, that's not plain old Notepad! Twisted Evil

I use SciTE. It does not support ahk out of the box, but it isn't hard to add.
