| I think a lot of the utilities provided by www.nirsoft.net are fantastic, but since more than a few of them are "sketchy" to say the least I was wondering if anyone knows/feels if they can be trusted? I suppose what I mean is: How can I be sure if the provided utilities won't be harmfull to my computer or network or somehow send sensitive information over the internet? |

| I love the utilities that Nir Sofer makes. Small, self-contained and very useful. I don't believe that I've ever read any bad press regarding his apps. |

| I agree, they're sweet! I've never had any issues either, but I got a bad feeling the other day when I decided to "perform a vulnerability test" on my network at work. We use Symantec AntiVirus Active Protect (or whatever it's called), but only a few of the utilities were discovered as being a potential danger. It made me wonder if I had unknowingly sent all my passwords (including the administrator password) off to NirSoft. |

| I would think that it might detect it as a threat as some of the exe's do many different things, some of which are pretty deep level tasks. Some tools sniff passwords and tcp packets, which could be seen as hacker tools. |

I can confirm that some of them are detected by Symantec AntiVirus as being threats, which is normal since many do threatening things. What I wanted to confirm was whether or not the provided tools do anything more than that which their descriptions state, such as report back the retrieved information over the net.
The more I learn about Windows and the way it works, the more frightened I am at how easy certain malicious things can be accomplished. I'm guessing that I'm not alone in realising this sort of thing, but it's slightly distressing nonetheless! |

I noticed he has a utility to change system volume:
| Quote: |
Increase the system volume by 2000 units (out of 65535) | Code: | | nircmd.exe changesysvolume 2000 |
|
65535 is 2 to the 16th I believe. I wonder if this can be utilized to give 32 bit sound output, when combined with a 16bit sound card. Not that I think anyone should do this --- there wouldn't be that much benefit even if you could |
