PostPosted: Wed Jun 23, 2010 5:32 pm    Post subject: Menu Accelerator not working Reply with quote

Is anyone else running PKL having a problem with the menu accelerator keys not working properly?

For instance, to access the file menu, one would normally type alt-F. With PKL active, typing alt-F flashes the file menu, but does not leave it displayed. To display it I need to press and release alt, and then press the F.

Do I have something in my layout that is causing this to happen? How can I correct it?

@DreymaR, you've help me with all my other problems, any ideas on this one?

No rathkopf, I think there is a genuine problem with the Alt-key functionality.

What I do is to tap the Alt key, then navigate by menu shortcut letters (such as tapping 'f' for the File menu and then, e.g., 'p' for print) and/or Extend-mode arrows/Enter/Esc (important).

Even worse: Some BBS systems (including this one) mess up the Extend key mode by activating the menu line each time I press an Extended key! That really annoys me.

Possibly, mapping the Alt key in PKL might get around the problem, but I feel uncomfortable mapping the modifier keys in general.

That's too bad.

I've been using the same workaround, but it is taking some training.

Okay. Well, I was sent here from the www.portableapps.com site. How do I install this Portable Keyboard Layout program to my portableapps suite as it is not a .paf.exe file?

Hello and welcome. I just installed/copied PKL into the PortableApps folder - I think it has the right folder structure to work as expected after that.

Okay, I will describe the problem better:

If I were to press my CapsLock ('Extend') key plus N to get LeftArrow for instance, the menu bar gets activated! It only happens when editing a text field on some BBS boards.

The weird thing is though, that right now I don't have this problem whether in this forum or in the Colemak forum where it's also been bothering me. I'll report if it happens again - maybe the BBS software got updated?

What is the BBS? I don’t know this word/software/etc.

Bulletin Board System (google is your friend...). This forum runs on phpBB, one of the most common BBS softwares.

You can try the preview of the new version at https://sourceforge.net/projects/pkl/files/Portable%20Keyboard%20Layout/0.4%20preview/pkl.exe/download Maybe it works well with Alt shortcuts. Please send me any problem! (It uses {Blind} with an Alt-keystroke if the (original) Alt is pressed)

I can not reproduce it and Extend key works for me very well.

Yes, the strange thing is that I can't reproduce it either. Something has been upgraded/patched that makes the original problem go away it seems. No idea whether old BBS software would still present a problem.

But as long as nobody are having actual problems right now, you shouldn't worry! Smile

I would like to have my dead keys be the intro key to hot strings. I am new to this, but from what I can see the second key always results in a unicode character. What I want is the second key to start a sequence line like {home}+{end}^c . Also, I use ddvorak and need the ctrl modifiers on the numeric keys in an easy to type way. In this use case [dk]h would result in ^4.

I did see the post to allow the use of qwerty keys following modifiers but that is a little extreme for my needs.

I can imagine a couple of other solutions but none are as neat as it would be to put the hot strings directly into the deadkey table.

After more testing, I discovered that I can do exactly what I asked.

All I needed to do was try putting my hot string where the decimal value is in the example.

This is a GREAT program.

Would it be helpful if I would write a quick start to help new users see how easy and flexible personalized keyboard layouts are?

That sounds helpful indeed!

Farkas himself isn't a native English speaker and has asked people for advice before. I'm pretty sure he'd appreciate your offer too.
