Actually, not so. In fact, the right to privacy isn't mentioned in the Constitution, nor a right to anonymity.

The U.S. Supreme Court has however interpreted the Constitution to protect (edit: replaced "permit" with "protect") anonymous speech in many circumstances, but their rulings do not guarantee it in all circumstances or create anonymity as an undeniable human right. Anonymous criticism of the government is definitely protected, but libel and malicious behavior is not.

Sadly, it's a few bad people using the internet to pseudo-anonymously slander and attack people that provokes equally bad legislation. There are and will continue to be people unfortunately victimized by others hiding behind the cloak of internet anonymity. My guess is particularly bad examples will provoke other legislatures in the future to try and develop laws that'll make finding and prosecuting the bad guys easier while restricting the government's ability to interfere with valid or protected anonymous behavior. Not that I expect they'll get it right...

Regardless I am American and feel that 99% of our lawmakers are idiots. Its all about money in America. If you have alot your voice is heard if you don't ... well then you don't matter (unless your here illegally from another country then they baby you) We would hate to hurt the feelings of another country but we'll step on our own.

I strayed but feel better now that I got that off my chest lol

If anonymity were illegal, only outlaws would remain anonymous.
