|
|
I don't have a crimper, and IT won't provide me a crossover cable to replace the one that has broken tabs on both ends in the training room that goes from the IP phone to the switch, leading to all the PCs in the training room being disconnected from the network whenever anyone moves the phone in order to call me to ask me how to log in, etc.
So, here's how to make crossover cable with scissors and tape*:
1. Cut your patch cable in half and strip the wires on both halves
2. Connect the solid green wires to the solid orange wires
3. Connect the striped green wires to the striped orange wires
4. Connect the other wires to the matching color.
5. Tape it up!
6. (Optional) Add a tag to both ends that says "Crossover"
*Not responsible for any damages.
P.S. I tied the cable in a square knot in order to prevent strain from reaching the splice. _________________ [Join IRC!]

I've had to do this very thing a couple times myself. I've noticed many retail stores selling crossover cables for a higher price than regular CAT5... It's the exact same material! _________________ http://autohotkey.net/~jaco0646/ |

@ Rhys, you forgot to mention that duct tape is the ideal tape for this
Yeah, it's odd how crossover cables sometimes cost more at the store, though it's probably because there's less demand for them (or because some sales guy who doesn't know the difference between 'CAT5' and 'CATS' thinks 'crossover' sounds more expensive) _________________ My Home Thread

I thought it was widely known that duct tape is ideal for anything, with the sole exception of sealing ducts.
I think in my next life I'm going to be a cable manufacturer - The markup is insane! _________________ [Join IRC!]

Anyways, net cable is an awesome business at the right venue. Just buy a crimper, a big bag of RJ45-m connectors and a ¼ Km spool of cable, and set up shop right in front of a college dorm complex for the first couple days of the term. Then you can undercut the dorm's store prices and still make a nice profit. _________________ My Home Thread

demand dictates the price, lower demand means higher price
UNLESS its coca cola and their bottled water lines:
500ml Coke $2.60 (filtered water used in process)
500ml Water $3.00 (same filtered water)
the water is 1/10th the cost to filter than to create coke with all its additives yet is more expensive _________________

So... you're saying if people don't want a product, they'll pay more for it? _________________ http://autohotkey.net/~jaco0646/ |

| No. If there is lower demand, the seller will have to have a higher price to cover the margin. There is always someone out there that is willing to pay some ridiculous price for something not a lot of people want/have. |

Supply and Demand
Demand and Price are directly related.

The first graph on that Wikipedia page is also the first graph you see in a microeconomics course.

Since most CAT5 cable is not turned into crossover cable, there is a lower supply of crossover versus CAT5; thus, a higher price on the crossover. To be fair, there is also probably a lower demand for the crossover compared to regular network cable; but the lower demand brings the price down, not up. It moderates the effect of lower supply. _________________ http://autohotkey.net/~jaco0646/ |
