I've reviewed the list of phpBB 3.x features at phpBB2 - phpBB3 Feature Comparison. For this community, the only new features that seem compelling to me are Attachments (including Automatic Image Thumbnails & Placement) and "Subscribe to Forums" (similar to "watch this topic").
Our current phpBB 2.x has a lot of custom mods such as Titan's syntax coloring in [code] sections, and spam prevention to allow guests to post. These mods would require days or weeks to rewrite and test for phpBB 3.x. Even so, the upgrade may happen someday, or at least an attachment mod might get added if we keep phpBB 2.x. |

| a mod which indicates questions without reply in the 'Ask for help' section, also a better searcher system with more advanced filtering options would be useful for this community. |

I think Google is missing at least 25% of the topics at the forum (for some reason, it just doesn't index the whole thing). As an alternative, you might consider the this site's own search form, which sorts by relevancy rather than chronologically, and also offers the option to search for an exact phrase.
Although phpBB 3's search has improved (for an example see http://www.phpbb.com/community/search.php), it still seems to lack "exact phrase" and "sort by relevancy". phpBB 3 describes its search as, "Place + in front of a word which must be found and - in front of a word which must not be found. Put a list of words separated by | into brackets if only one of the words must be found. Use * as a wildcard for partial matches." |

Dont forget PHPBB2 will be retired soon.
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=900655
| Quote: | Commencing Wednesday 1st October 2008, phpBB 2.0.x download links will be removed from the download page at phpBB.com. Anyone wishing to obtain phpBB 2.0.x can continue to obtain the 2.0.x package at sourceforge.net.
Commencing Thursday 1st January 2009, phpBB 2.0.x will be formally retired, and support will no longer be actively provided for 2.0.x. Converting from 2.0.x to 3.0.x will continue to be supported.
Security patches, if required, will be provided until Sunday 1st February 2009.
The reason for the early retirement is the PHP Group's decision to retire PHP 4. phpBB 2.0 mainly runs on the PHP 4 codebase and it would be unwise to require people to have an unsupported version of PHP installed in order to use phpBB. |
