Mozilla Thunderbird Email Backup - Backing up emails can be a cumbersome task, and the results are often not very user friendly nor easily accessible. These are the reasons that Mbox2xml was created.

We thought an email backup tool should have the following properties:

Easy to use.
The backups should be easily accessible, both for humans and computer programs.
The tool should allow for automation, since it involves a backup task.
So it was decided that the program should store the emails in XML format which, together with a provided stylesheet, can be viewed in any modern webbrowser, no matter where the backup is stored. Also, XML is easily imported by a growing number of applications. And if the tool was not only usable through a graphical user interface, but also from the command line, it could more easily be integrated in existing backup tasks.

If you don't mind installing Perl (if you haven't already done so).
You can use Mhonarc to do something similar http://www.mhonarc.org/

The thread index is very useful for me.
