Quote:
TestDisk is OpenSource software and is licensed under the terms of the GNU Public License (GPL).

TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

TestDisk can
Fix partition table, recover deleted partition
Recover FAT32 boot sector from its backup
Rebuild FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector
Fix FAT tables
Rebuild NTFS boot sector
Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup
Fix MFT using MFT mirror
Locate ext2/ext3 Backup SuperBlock
Undelete files from FAT filesystem
Copy files from deleted FAT, NTFS and ext2/ext3 partitions.

TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. For those who know little or nothing about data recovery techniques, TestDisk can be used to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can then be sent to a tech for further analysis. Those more familiar with such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool in performing onsite recovery. More

My 10-year-old primary HDD sorta bit the dust and with the help of this software I managed to recover my data in about 15 minutes. For a console program, it's fairly user-friendly. The documentation is well above average, in my opinion.

Cool

I also can vouch for the usefulness of this software. If anyone ever finds that "mysteriously" their drives seemingly contain no data, try TestDisk to see if it can restore the partition tables. You may just save yourself hours if not years of time and heartache Smile Of course, given that this software is quite powerful in its effects one should feel VERY comfortable in one's understanding of the situtation before executing most of its commands (just an advisory for those people in a rush).

I'm not real comfortable with trying to restore partition tables, etc., so what I did was just find the data and copy it over to another drive.
That's something the average user should be able to accomplish simply by following the walk-through.

TestDisk is a famous tool:

Unfortunately, or fortunately, I've never had a chance to use it. Another tool I've never had a chance to use is SpinRite (:commercial):

I used to use the Symantec Ghost (:commercial) for a boot partition, and R-Studio Network (:commercial) when needed to on-line data recovery from (data) partitions.

Yes, I knew that SpinRite was written in ASM.
