These 2 programs I use a LOT. Both are freeware and, IMHO, much better than the native Windows programs.

FreeCommander - A replacement for Explorer, with 2 panes and tabbed browsing {both of which can be configured to your desires}, plus a lot of other nifty little additions.
www.freecommander.com

Current Processes - A replacement for TaskManager, and can be used even when TaskManager is disallowed {as it usually is on public computers}.

I use QTTabBar on the explorer. I couldn't get used to those explorer replacements.

Here's a screenshot and some comments about my customized explorer. (you can translate it from catalan to english here)

FileBox eXtender. I use it everytime! Very easily configurable favorites for explorer. Fileboxes for load or save files can be configured to show detailed Listview!

I don't want to hi-jack this topic, but I also used Filebox eXtender. And I can recognize myself on the text you wrote. But right now I prefer the locked tabs of qttabbar to have my favorites in explorer. (although qttabbar also has a button for favorites).

I learnt to live without detail view on open/save file boxes (the way I use computer I don't open/save as very much).

did I say I also used Q-Dir? Rolling Eyes

@AutoPepe: Have you looked at the explorer under Views->Toolbars? There you can activate QTTabBar.

i followed this post by the QTTabBar listing,
& want to share my experience with the utilities discussing here -

i also used & liked FileBox eXtender very much,
until i discovered " XFilesDialog "

for me, it does everything FileBox eXtender does, + more -
like give some very useful buttons on the Title Bar of Windows Explorer.

Below is a screen cap combining both how i have QTTabBar setup,
as well as what the XFilesDialog box looks like for a "Save As" -
notice it does Details view, etc.

i've used the Explorer replacements mentioned here,
along w/ xplorer2 (which i found best for me),
but like others i did not completely get used to them,
but find that QTTabBar tweaks to run very great for me,
along w/ FolderSize, TeraCopy, AHK, StrokeIt, etc -

thank you for the chance to share my tools,
as i have only learned about them thru forums like this
