Both AutoIt and AutoHotKey are good languages. Personally, I use both, and find them quite useful. To the regs in the AutoIt community, I humbly ask for the flaming to stop. To the AutoHotKey community, I also humbly ask the same. Live and let live. We could learn a thing or 2 from each other. There is a huge wealth of knowledge if we share it and get along. Just my 2 cents.

I think AutoIt tries to mass market itself as a general purpose programming language whereas Chris understands that AutoHotkey is mainly used as a desktop macro tool and develops it with specific features and careful design for a compromise between power and ease of use. It excels in the features mentioned - hotkeys, window and file manipulation, regex et al. AutoIt is very similar to Basic, and even though a few things like GUI can be done quicker there are hundreds of IDEs like VB which reduce AutoIt to just another less glamorous variant.

I use AutoHotkey a lot for backups and macros and C# for larger server apps. AutoIt could be something in between but it doesn't offer the speed and easiness of AutoHotkey nor the right tools and feature set for things you'd program in C#. I have used both with an open mind and I can honestly say that I will never go near AutoIt again.

At this point between the 2 languages, there is pretty much nothing that I would want to do with AutoIt that I could not do with AutoHotkey.

The languages are a lot more evenly matched than many people think.

Both are great languages though, having their plus and minus...

I go through forums everyday that have people saying "this os is better than that os" or "my programming language is better than yours!"... When are people going to stop treating Operating Systems and Programming Languages as religion, and start treating them as tools?

I could care less if I'm using Linux or Windows as long as I get the job done. AutoIT and AutoHotKey can both do most of what the other one can--but there are times when one can do something better/faster/smarter than the other. A programmer trying to get a job done should just suck it up and use the best tool for the job.

For me, AutoIT's syntax is more intuitive, and I use it for the majority of code I write at work that is not done in C#. But I've used AHK on many occasions because of some of it's built in functions that are not (or no longer) present in AU3.

At the end of the day, it's all just 1's and 0's folks.

I agree: Autoit's forum was not of anyhelp for me in the past

The "activeness" of ahk's forum is very important to me, the community is nice and you can use your imagination to create new script (keeping in mind that people will help you out if you hit a wall). Thats very important.

Let me tell you guys that what's happening in eastern countries
as far as i know, Autohotkey has more users than AutoIt in eastern countries
also Autohotkey has dedicated community in South Korea and Japan while AutoIt doesn't
it's very impressive story because AutoHotKey doesn't support unicode yet comparing AutoIt does.
it's like critical hit for AutoHotKey because Hotstring doesn't works in local language
although Unicode is very important to asian users AutoHotKey spreaded more than AutoIt.
you should think about that why Asian users uses AutoHotKey even it doesn't support unicode


especially in my area, AutoIt is being used mainly as a tool for Making portable apps.
AutoHotKey is being used for more various things.
personally i'm using AutoHotKey to make my own small apps.
i don't know when will AutoHotKey supports unicode.

I used AutoIT. Found it first and started using it. It was adequate. The biggest problem I found was in support. The support community was rude and would flame you quickly because you asked questions that a newbie would ask. AHK's communities were tolerant to newbies and as a result it is the language I use over 3 years later.

Just as simple as that! Service after the sale! BAM!

And one other thing...As long as there is 2 or more sides to anything there will always be a contest atmosphere.
Cowboys and Indians
Vader and Skywalker
etc.

And still one other thing...someone in this topic said it don't matter what you use as long as it gets the job done...NO! You choose 80grit sandpaper or Charmin quilted toilet paper. They both get the job done so it doesn't matter right?

then which language does AutoHotkey resembling to?
is it unique?
