|
|
I was looking for a lightweight portable RTF-editor supporting styles, hotkeys for styles and a list of headings in a sidebar to keep track of the document structure. Open Office starts far too slowly on my netbook.
I tried four portable programs
Papyrus is lightweight and fast. It has a lot of really useful and original features. Maybe even those I was looking for- but I didn't find them. Textmaker doesn't have a sidebar, Abiword is not able to associate styles with hotkeys .
I settled for Atlantis. It is completely configurable (no need for AHK ) fast and has some surprising features as multiple selections, column block selections, saving text in some proprietary encrypted format etc. Unfortunately the author is reluctant to add support Open Office file format, he has some principal issues with free software. But using .doc as a travel format between Word, Open Office and Atlantis works perfectly.

How about QJot?
| Quote: | | QJot is a small USB portable alternative rich text editor that reads and writes .doc files, inserts images and more. It is basically meant to serve as a good WordPad replacement. It supports Unicode and runs under Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Its native format is RTF, but it can open, edit and save Word and WordPerfect files (though not with all of their features). It can be used with any script that is supported by Windows and for which a font and a keyboard driver are installed, including right-to-left scripts. QJot is fully portable and can be run from a USB flash drive. |

how about Jarte;
| Quote: | | Jarte \jär · 'tay\ noun (est. 2001) 1. A free word processor based on the Microsoft WordPad word processing engine built into Windows. 2. A fast starting, easy to use word processor that expands well beyond the WordPad feature set. 3. A small, portable word processor whose documents are fully compatible with Word and WordPad. |

I have used/demo'ed numerous RTF (& syntax) editors.
I can't consider any that don't support MDI.
Some that support MDI don't support switching tabs with the keyboard -
only by point & click ... can't consider those either ...
In any case they all seem to have one fatal flaw or another ...
This week I was looking for something simple/portable/MDI to use in my PE builds.
IntelliEdit seems to be just right for rtf/MDI under a PE boot.
I would never consider IntEd for normal use ... |

I found out (the hardway) that IntelliEdit won't open files throught the XP contextmenu,
so I had to dump IntEd & return to the search.
I decided to look @ Atlantis again.
There is Nova (a free limited feature version) and the 30-day full featured trial.
The 30-day trial uses ini file settings when installed to /run from a USB stick - which is really nice under a PE boot.
Atlantis is almost a standalone exe with fully functional MDI.
While under a PE boot I determined that the 30-day trial will ALWAYS run under a PE boot
(unless the PE boot has been open for 36 continuous days ...)
Oh yeah, while under a PE boot I also found the reg key that implements/controls the 30-day time limit ... |
