What you have to understand is that, unlike the other Nobel Prizes, the Peace Prize is as much a politically driven gesture as it is meant to recognize a person's achievements.
In the case of Mr. Obama, the Nobel committee (5 Norwegian guys, btw) most likely based their decision with greater regards to the future than to the past. _________________ My Home Thread

This is where my problem comes in. All he has done so far is do a better job of being diplomatic vs forceful when compared to Bush. He is making good steps to bring peace to places, but the fact is it hasn't happened yet. If he gets talks to bring peace or even if it is seen that his talks were the turning point that caused peace at some later date, then he deserves the award. The award should be for a great achievement not the potential to make a great achievement. |

Unlike the other Nobel prizes? I would venture to say that most of them are politically driven at this point. I've followed the economics and literature Nobel Prizes for some time and they've been bad and getting worse in terms of political bias. _________________ Try Quick Search for Autohotkey or see the tutorial for newbies. |

I stand corrected; both the Peace and Literature prizes do have significant presence on the political playing field. I don't doubt that the Prize for Literature is often awarded with regards to politically driven work, since "idealistic writing" ("den som inom litteraturen har producerat det utmärktaste i idealisk riktning" - A. Nobel) must necessarily include that kind of literature.
As for Economics... you should know that there is no Nobel Prize for Economics, there is the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economics. But since economics is so intermeshed with politics, I would agree that it's impossible to win that Prize for achievements that are entirely apolitical.
@ TheIrishThug: Many people share your opinion. However, there is precedent for the Peace Prize being awarded to people who hadn't ""earned"" it, but were possibly in a position to do so after receiving the award (most famously: Yasser Arafat). _________________ My Home Thread

| I still hold my opinion that they shouldn't be giving it out for potential to achieve. But since it's not the first time they've done it, then I default to it's their award they can do what they want. |

I would suggest that Mr. Obama deserves another award, the Double-Speak award.
He promised to close Gitmo, "Obama: Close Gitmo on Day" is it closed ?
Barack Obama "Public Will Have 5 Days To Look At Every Bill That Lands On My Desk"
of 62 bills signed by August 20, 2009, only 42 were signed after 5 days, only ONE was posted for 5 days before signing.

I could go on, but there isn't enough storage in the WHOLE internet |
