I'm using Desktops v1.0 by Sysinternals [ http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/cc817881.aspx ].
It's very stable:
- 4 unique Desktop Objects created, meaning that Application windows are bound to a desktop object when they are created
but it has limitations:
- The copy function does not work between the different desktops
- Unable to move windows between desktops
My questions to you:
- What virtual desktop software/script do you use?
- What virtual desktop software/script can you recommend? |

| i read info on it from your link. what advantage would you have in having a bunch of apps open all in different desktops at the same time ? it doesn't seem that hard to launch what i need from the reg windows desktop and close what i dont need. |

I use Virtuawin and it works great. Lifhacker listed it as the best virtual desktop program for windows.
D32, it's an organizational thing. My laptop is old and has a small screen, so when I am working on things maximizing is a must. Once you are working with more than just two application Alt+Tab becomes slow and annoying. Virtual desktops lets you jump to 4 different programs with one hotkey. |

I use Authohotkey for the same purpose. If every window is maximized then no virtual desktop software is needed, because you can assign hotkeys to each application with autohotkey. |

I just discovered a promising AHK virtual desktop script created by ahklerner [ http://www.autohotkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=28504 ].
Pros:
- The copy function works between the desktops
Cons:
- It creates virtual desktops on top of one desktop object. This means that new application windows are bound to the virtual desktop, which in some cases can result in some inconsistent window behavior.
- The concept of this virtual desktop manager doesn't yield as fast desktop switching as Desktops v1.0 |

i notice that VirtuaWin now has a module Message Passthrough
| Quote: | This module reposts all received VirtuaWin module information messages to a specified third party window, such as an autohotkey script. The third party window can hence be notified of events such as desktop switches, requests for the module to display configuration details and VirtuaWin configuration changes. An example autohotkey script and the module source code is included.
The third party window identifies itself by writing its window handle and message reception details into a data file read by the module. More than one instance of the module can be run at once, by creating a copy of the executable file with a different name (the window class name is derived from the executable path). |

DeskMan is a simple virtual desktop manager that supports seamless switching using mouse and hotkeys. _________________ TypingAid autocompletion program made with AHK. |

After extensive search of all the options:
the three best ideas are ExeDesk, ManageDesk and another one, KarkovDesk I think it's called.
Of these three, 30-day trial Managedesk. I bought it, being entirely happy with it's functionality. No bugs, unless Exedesk, which promised, never delivering, and the last one was too underdeveloped and rigind.
Of the chasing pack, VirtuaWin is most responsive, Dexpot too complicated. Everything else - behind par. Managedesk or VirtuaWin the conclusion. Shell out the 50USD and Managedesk creates your extra desktops, as customisable as you Windows desktop, as entire,y back-uppable folders in C:\>...User\Desktop
AhkDesk
VbDesk
Email desk [All customizable with icon layout, wallpapers, etc.] |
