I would add:

For great part of World, computer donations are gold mine and run with 98 (or 95), so If not say stupidity, it's run with Internet Explorer 6 and it doesn't support PNG ... However, internet using is rare for this kind of computer.
In other words we lose the advantage of PNG's alpha color!

It seems negligible but it is the hidden face of the iceberg.

"The normal lambda user" use what is provided instead of choosing another browser or just a free OS ...
It is rare to give window license or other old software and we don't know if this legal about law... and I'm sure you have old keys win95+ that you don't use, and more.
Same thing for old hardware that can transit by boat .. . It's not good for business, but I am not the arbiter of your conscience, and Bill Gates gives already millions $ to foundations, tax or not...
We do not even know if there are famous foundations to give our old licenses and other...

IN SHORT, everything depends of project and do not forget this part of the World, compatibility may be essential!
Like AHK , it can use on win95 +, and giving very old versions of software:) and open source!

Do not forget the forced way of PNG because the GIF owner is bankrupt and they was a "Request For Comments" will trigger PNG to ISO standard! Today, we use may not be using PNG without all this events ...

At the end, image format is into a good case, when we see audio format only WAV codec is supplied (and outside Europe WMA, Due to blockade of WMP but old OS haven't WMP) same thing for video ... but ogg and h264 are awsome ...
I can not count the times I had to install basic codecs MP3, AAC, OGG, DIVX, XVID and H264 for friends ... it is incomprehensible how the interest of money has limited computer and internet ...

My reply is out of this thread, but to justify the choice of GIF, even if GIF must disappear as soon as possible.
Edit: It's possible to have a world map about autohotkey downloading and acces to forum ?

...any "good" Bill Gates does is completely negated with how he handles Windows...with WGA, DRM ("Protected Media Path") & 7 (or so) Editions of Vista/7 so he can discriminate against people ("you're too poor to have the cool version, Windows 7 Ultimate Edition, so here's your copy of Windows 7 Street Urchin Edition, just give me $100, oh, you don't have that either?, then go away!") (plz tell me how that is not discrimination?)...Bill Gates is evil, no matter what...he's completely anti-Open Source & completely pro-DRM...until that changes, he's evil...

...I have WMP & don't use it any more, cuz I use VLC, so I don't know how being in Europe without WMP is a bad thing. Just get VLC! I don't know exactly what you mean by "install basic codecs" (do you mean a Codec Pack? {I heard those are dangerous}), but with VLC you don't "install" codecs, VLC just plays stuff with it's own plugins/codecs (without "installing" them or mucking with the system)...

do you expect windws to be free? sure it'd be very nice, but any company needs a profit to stay alive.
man hours x employee payment x profit x advertisement x production x distributing = sales price.
watered down versions = less man hours.
watered down versions = less advertisement.
watered down versions = less sales price.

anything free would put them in the hole. and AFAIK, Windows is MS's biggest investment/product.

... i think ...

btw, this topic is about creating .gif's or other animated images, not an os war of foss/payware war. (although, I myself prefer free OR foss over payware/shareware. but it's never bad to buy good stuff (like windows. hehe))

...it is/will be...ReactOS...

...they have already invested the "man hours" into the Ultimate Edition...so I think it's unfair to release lesser versions...for a simple example, they felt it necessary to add more code & man hours to DENY the Security Tab for XP Home users...(which I have hex edited to re-enable)...

ReactOS is not by Microsoft. so they don't need to lower the price...yet (if ever). only if/when they become serious competition. Rolling Eyes

yup.
but not the other lesser versions. thus the less price for the lesser versions.
you pay for the extra features. the extra features cost more man hours.

not everyone needs all the bells and whistles. so dishing out that extra $200 would be a waste for a 'basic' user.

i'm not trying to be stubborn, i do understand, and kinda agree.
bed time. bye.

...my point is, the code is written, it doesn't matter what version it was written for, copy/paste it from Ultimate to Lesser (or just forget the lesser versions & give everyone Ultimate)...

i also use VLC, but it ain't good for everything. I'm not to fond of it for quick playback of stuff. but maybe if i'm watching something a 1/2 hour + I'll use it.

For history, long time ago, VLC was created by French students (DIVX too) he can launch french TV (TNT H264) and he is initialy use by "free" ( a big ISP in France )
It also explains the popularity of VLC opposite to WMP in Europe (and about anti monopoly, and a mind work can not have patent in Europe) ...

However VLC is just a launcher and a flux reader , and he don't install codec for all your system but just for VLC.
For example, if you want to launch and ogg file it can't work with AHK or MCI library or WMP, because you need this codec...

I think the problem is not that Windows is not free, it is rather the monopoly and the fact that no codec is provided...
An OS open source and free is very dangerous if it is used by all the world, such as faults are readable ...

I do not see what it costs to include the ten popular codec in windows update ... one side it pays less but is more secure and very useful for ordinary users ...

At this day they are war for video codec and html5:
go to google and write: ogg versus h264 html5
and you may get depressed in your corner Laughing

Internet Explorer 6 does support PNG.
It has issues supporting alpha channel of PNG images, but webmasters use well known workaround(s) for these cases.
Beside, IE6 is on its way out, hopefully. As are Win9x systems.
Sometime, you have to move on and stop spending energy on supporting 10 to 15 year old systems/softwares... Even if I only recently replaced my old computer with Win98 on it. My children were using it, but even Flash applets were lagging on it.
