Thanks SpamAlert,
@Chris: Could you please remove that user and this topic?

I checked the memberlist. There are several new users that haven't posted anything but have very obscure web sites. Chris, can you go through that list? _________________ Ciao

This is a hopeless battle. Chris would do well to apply his time and efforts toward developing AHk and community participation.
The only way to prevent these posts is to secure the forum. Don't allow anyone to post until they are registered, and don't allow anyone to register until they are authenticated. Then there is the question of how to distinguish legitimate users.
If the registrations and posts are done interactively by humans, and not by programs, then authentication and distinction cannot be accomplished simply.
An additional measure, would be to implement moderation. However, this could backfire, and incur the wrath of those who seek to subvert our community.
Finally, an automated detection and removal system could be implemented. The success/failure of such systems is already well known. However, this may be the best solution, or some combination of the above.
... or we could simply ignore the posts and the users, and hope they will lose interest and leave. |

Chris, can you go through that list? | Yes, I've already started reviewing the user list regularly and deleting abusive users. Fortunately, the forum software provides the means to ban certain e-mail addresses and domains, which has been quite helpful.
In cases where the forum software is inadequate for banning spammers, I've been customizing its code to to filter out spam posts and users.
Shimanov, your points are well made. For now, I'd like to keep the forum as open as possible and fight the spammers through automated means and by simply deleting spam whenever it appears (which thankfully isn't often). |

The best solution.

Absolutely. I would not suggest otherwise. The community would not be the same if it were isolated. |
