Ok. Before I start my rant, you should know that I've done in-depth comparisons of different mail services before, even going around to different e-zines and reading reviews. I've tried yahoo (ugh), hotmail (quadruple ugh), my isp (so-so), and various proprietary ones; I once got a free offer for a professional service, but it only lasted six months. Admittedly, I have not yet tried gmail, but I finally found BlueBottle, and I've been using it for over 8 months now with no qualms whatsoever. It's free, supports pop3, imap, and smtp, has a very nice web interface, and a 250mb mailbox (should be enough for any casual user, and most pros). But the best part about it is the spam protection. I am not kidding or exaggerating when I say it is flawless. It utilizes an innovative system that works in reverse, automatically assuming everything is spam, and letting it through only by various methods of verification, of which you can choose to be very involved in. I had only to set a few filters (four or five) at the start, and then it was bliss.

You can even use it on top of other mail services; it can simply route it through, and you can still get BlueBottle-quality spam protection for, say, gmail. Trust me, you should at least check this out.
