Replace spikes with electric shocks?
Nah, in our modern times, animal lovers would howl! (or meow...)

Have you noticed, that there are about 30 keys to play on, but only 7 cats? It looks like a cat can produce sounds of different pitches, dependent on the excitation type or level. I am going to test this theory...

PhiLho, no electric shock, use 8 relays to spike into cat's tail (USB maybe 256)
Laszlo... hmm... 30 keys ... digital/analog converter ?

OMG Laughing

This is reminiscent of the Poodle Gun in the TV series The Tick. Viscious poodles are launched from a gattling gun to catch your adversaries off guard.

Then there's the shark-a-pult, which is a catapult modified to fling live sharks (I think this was from Futurama).

I don't think anyone can beat the Land Shark Gun from the game Armed & Dangerous. From Wikipedia:

The Land Shark gun fires a baby 'Land Shark' into the ground when triggered, a system of hormone treatments and cattle prods growing it to full size in seconds. The shark proceeds to burst out of the ground, eating any enemies in the vicinity.
