I highly recommend ResHack (thumbsup).
If you ever encounter file that ResHack can't read properly, try XN Resource Editor (but ResHack is closer to my heart 8) )

although its not free

...you know what that means?...it NOT an alternative!

Sorry, but I hate when people "suggest" non-freeware.

you know i't not illegal to buy software, right?
it means you support the company/person/team.

buying software is not bad, but cracking & illegal keys is bad :)

so yes, it is an alternative. weather you buy it or crack it.

ps: I myself prefer anything free (not only limited to opensource). but if the product costed $$$ and i wanted. i would buy it and not get it illegally.

rawr. be very afraid

You can use Sandboxie, and nothing ever gets really written to your drive/registry.

Sandboxie is awesome (and freeware, despite it's nag to register/support by donate).
You can install/run almost everything in a sandbox, and after you delete sandbox's content, there's no trace left.
The other alternative would be to run a virtual machine, but that's slow and inefficient.

It's a rock. Can't wait to tell my friends. They don't have a rock this big.

Why don't you Google it instead of raising your post count with such small and unnecessary questions?...

After reading Sandboxie Help Topics, I'd recommend reading up SandboxDiff too.

Well, Sysinternals' Process Monitor can do that too, with lot of details (but doesn't to sandboxing).
