I like it. It's worthless for people can't afford to buy a new computer but if you were planning to buy a new computer anyway... $100 ain't nothing.

Two truths: 1) There is no need to panic. 2) Most antivirus programs will continue to be updated after April 8 and a few will continue to work and will updated well after April 8.

Two more truths: 1) Antivirus programs do not protect from most OS security gaps (aka "exploits"). If a security hole is found after April 8, it will probably remain there until the end of time. There are some who speculate that some malicious software has not been released yet because the authors are waiting for April 8 deadline. 2) Most antivirus programs only protect you from a fraction of the viruses that are out there. An antivirus program should only be one piece of your security arsenal.

My unsolicited advice: There is no need to upgrade right away but an upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8 should be on your list of things to do. I was one of the few who were planning to use Windows XP for another year or two but my 10-year old computer pooped out and so I recently upgraded to refurbished 5-year old Windows 7 computer.

No need to fret over demise of Windows XP:

I've received a lot of e-mail from panicked XP users - to whom I say, relax. You don't need Microsoft for technical support. You can protect your computer with a good antivirus program, like the free versions of Ad-Aware, Avast and AVG. And don't worry about apps and devices. Most software is available now in the cloud - making it compatible with any operating system - and most printers, routers and other devices you're likely to need will work with XP. :ugeek:

Any answer right now would be pure speculation. Microsoft says that after April 8, all automatic updates will go away. Can you get the final update for a not up-to-date machine after April 8? Probably for a while, but that too will eventually go away.

my question is this: if i have an XP box and it is not 100% up-to-date and then i turn on this box in May will the existing XP update to the latest or the final update or the update function cease to exist completely in April? does this mean any last minute update must be performed by the end of the stated XP support date? obviously this does not mean the final update will elevate the XP status to perfection since it (XP) will still remain an incomplete project and subject to new susceptibilities. yes? :ugeek:
