Could have maybe gotten a few bucks each as a core to be refurbished by one of those companies, but too much trouble.

yes, but! these must be "professionally" refurbished, certified, etc., and offered through reputable and qualified stores (Amazon, etc.). they must also offer limited warranties and after-service, and maintain established past customer-satisfaction history and ratings. :ugeek:

Maybe Microsoft don't. I regularly set up new Windows 7 systems, both towers and laptops. Windows 7 OEM is still available, and Windows 8 Pro includes downgrade rights to Windows 7.
