Anyone know why different Windows versions have different memory limits? (Not talking about 32 vs 64 bit). For example, Windows 7 limits.
Is this just a sales decision Microsoft makes to sell more expensive Windows versions, or is there some software overhead required to make Windows work at higher limits?

32bit has a mathematical address limitation I suppose with 64 bit it must be marketing

According to this, the limit is mostly artificially imposed by Microsoft to create price points for their various products.
The msdn seems to imply that there is some overhead associated with using >4GB of memory on a 32 bit system.

If processors were made exactly how I imagined them, then a 32 Bit processor could use exactly 2**32 Bytes RAM (=4 GB).

I would agree that the normal limit is 4GB on a 32 bit system, that's simple math.
However, just based on the reading I've done today prompted by LinearSpoon's question, it seems there are versions of x86 Windows (Server) that can support up to 128 GB of Ram.
The various methods of increasing Ram capabilities are:

• Physical Address Extension

  a processor feature that enables x86 processors to access more than 4 GB of physical memory on capable versions of Windows. Certain 32-bit versions of Windows Server running on x86-based systems can use PAE to access up to 64 GB or 128 GB of physical memory, depending on the physical address size of the processor.

• 4GT increases the portion of the virtual address space that is available to a process from 2 GB to up to 3 GB.

• AWE is a set of APIs that allows a process to allocate nonpaged physical memory and then dynamically map portions of this memory into the virtual address space of the process.
