Why do people use to host images posted in forum posts when those images may not be there 6 months from now?

From their wiki page If an image submitted by a user with a free account is not accessed at least once during a six-month period, it will be deleted

Why not use dropbox?

Because Dropbox requires more work.

imgur images last forever. I have images that have been up for YEARS. like 5+ on long dead forums I used to go to. I don't even have an account.
that "6 months" is probably just to cover their bum if something happens. "we said 6 months..."

and dropbox-like sites have bandwidth limits. in the past I've had my dropbox images and files on forums turn into "bandwidth exceeded this month" links. They've probably increased the limits since then, but meh. better safe than sorry. I'm not using DB links on public sites anymore.

I just found a post of mine on a really old community, from: August 24, 2012
it has an imgur link that still works. the post is loooong dead (tech blog, stuff doesn't get bumped up)

really no reason to not use imgur, unless the ads bother you. but ya'know, adblockers exist. disable on sites that go overboard / slow your pc down. keep ads on good sites.
