In German itself, what I was taught was to start thinking. That is not at all intended to go for translation. Understand all the verbs according to the context in which they are used and how they are used. Only start framing words, then. So avoid studying the verbs and nouns and try to recall them in the context or photographs etc. of their English meanings.

The verb playing, for instance, will be played but only for particular items such as musical instruments and anything. The verb for sport is Sport treiben instead of Sport spielen.

A little tip will be to draw photos next to the nouns that you learn from z.b. Blume, a tiny flower next to him. And just try to write the meaning of verbs in German itself. :)
