... I was going to just lurk, having not opened the forum for months and thus far finding today's visit very uninspiring. Then I read this, and had to log in to say thanks! For the laughs. :lolno: ...
To have to read statements like this from the (main) developer of AHK is very, very uninspiring. I hope it will last months just like last time before I have to read such stuff again.

I'm trying to understand this sentiment better. I thought Lexikos was responding to Raccoon's opinion (where he appears to be somewhat joking) about using AHK v2. It's arguably understandable if his opinion differs from that of Raccoon's about v2 or that he thought what he said was funny.
I won't switch to v2 because I actually prefer interactions between command AHK and expression AHK. v2 removes a plethora of programming style that needs to be brought back into the fold in order for v2 to be usable again.

MyVar = Naked Text

MyVar =
(
I love this style,
I will not code without it.
You are destroying simplicity
in the name of purity and are
putting unnecessary an burden on
simple old ladies and secretaries
who would learn from this easy style.
)

I refuse to use v2 out of protest. Fix it.

Well, some members might have felt left in the lurch by the main developer.
Also, since several people were wondering if he is ok, he could have at least login to the forums...

Members, fans, supporters etc. don't deserve such a treatment.

P.S. No offense, just my opinion.

Cheers!

i dont know if i understand your perspective. are you mad at lexikos or the users (like Raccoon)?

i thought lexikos' response to Raccoon was appropriate. Raccoon was talking with a demanding, self-entitled attitude. of course lexikos isn't going to like reading that.

I'm not totally disagreeing with the validity of your point, but since Lexikos is a volunteer developer, wide latitude should be given for extended breaks. We wouldn't know what his personal situation is.

For the good of the community and smooth continuation of AutoHotkey, some type of contingency or succession plan might be necessary to be made by the AutoHotkey Foundation LLC. Perhaps potential developers identified or groomed, who would be familiar with the source code. But, this is not to say that some outside developer with different language skills or ideas, shouldn't be given a chance or allowed to initiate a project.

His (lexikos' post) didn't make an impression as if he was too busy to visit the forums.
Yes, it is correct that he is not forced to login, but since several people started to worry (and to send him PMs), he could have at least give any “sign of life“.
And I highly doubt he didn't receive any e-mail
or that he didn't read the “is lexikos ok“ thread.

In German we call such guys Wichtigtuer.
As I already said, it would have been absolutely enough just to login 1 time...

Cheers!

I would recommend to dial back the drama - we already had enough of this in the last thread.
And don't take yourself too seriously - it won't help a bit.

- I'd thought that lexikos might find the forum a bit uninspiring when he came back.
- I'd been thinking of collecting interesting threads not in Bug Reports/Wish List/AutoHotkey v2 Development, but there weren't any. Well, maybe this one:
[Game] List of all AHK Games - AutoHotkey Community
https://autohotkey.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=36744
- I'd put some key threads here in the past, including 'POSTS FOR THE ATTENTION OF MAIN DEVS':
jeeswg's homepage - AutoHotkey Community
https://www.autohotkey.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=30931

- I might have started some more 'inspiring' threads, but ...
- I've gotten a bit tired of AHK v2 discussions, because of the failure of people to STATE A PROPOSAL, e.g. the specifics of what an implementation might look like. People just vaguely mention features. I find it far more rewarding to read, and potentially useful, when people outline their views in full in advance, rather than do nothing when they can, but criticise the resulting implementation afterwards.
- Plus I don't want anything to derail AHK v2 further. So I've been discussing ideas behind-the-scenes, and posting finished ideas/blueprint functions direct to my Wish List 2.0.

- @just me: Thanks for posting. I agree with the sentiment. Although at the same time I think it's better to hear people's real opinions.

- @guest3456: It's funny different perspectives. I didn't see it as a 'demanding, self-entitled attitude' at all. I saw it as someone basically resigned to the fact that they probably wouldn't get what they wanted, but valiant enough to fight for it. Simplicity is possibly the chief value of AutoHotkey. I usually view 'entitledness' as marked by surprise at not getting what you want.
- Raccoon's made around half-a-dozen quality wish-list proposals. While I think that requiring quotes for commands is fine. I do think we need ways to assign strings without quotes. My current AHK v1/v2 proposals:

Code: Select all

;AHK v1 style in AHK v1/v2
var `= my text %var% %obj.key% `s

;a continuation section mode in AHK v1 (and v2) that can handle AHK v1 style text
;and a mode that can handle " in AHK v1/v2 without needing ""

;possible letters:
;V (verbatim)
;Q (quotes don't need escaping)
- What I found uninspiring about this thread:
Allow AutoHotkey to Handle Binary Data - AutoHotkey Community
https://autohotkey.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=61502
- Was: one user, again, inventing things to be negative about, and going over the top with it.
- And another user, being too cryptic, and, again, turning a minor point into a prolonged discussion.
- So in short: be clear, try and state everything in one go, anticipate follow-up questions, try to be nice.
