Tatum starts it off his usual classic way, but Granz goes and barfs the recording, upon which Hampton/Tatum try to riff without a double-take. Too long. This rendition is better:
Steve has had a fascinating life and he has known a lot of legendary musicians including T-Bone Walker, Les Paul, Boz Scaggs, and so on. If you get a chance to see the interview on the Tonight Show, it's worth the watch.

Talking about Steves, there happens to have existed another one, (AFAIK) not related to the guy here or here- but who knows? Steve Gray was a more than competent exponent of groove and disco, and did a lot of cool stuff. Here's a selection:

Found this on my feed. The back story is fascinating and the performance is (for the most part) amazing. Definitely a blast from the past.
