AHK(v2) rebranding [Name Suggestions]

10 Oct 2013, 01:52

In case of a rebranding, a new brand name is required. The idea is to collect all suggestions here, and also to summarize the benefits/drawbacks of certain approaches, like having relations to AHK.

Thanks for your suggestions. :)

@Blackholyman:
While I don't want to be an authority which filters any suggestion, a few comments to your names anyway:
- Firstly, I like the idea of "HOT" in general :)
- HOTv2 and HOT++ suggest a superseding of HOT, yet there is no HOT to supersede.
- WinHOT clearly suggests a tool for windows which may quite limit the future of ... ehhh... [HOT]

I will put WinHOT into a new category "Windows related" since it will be a core decision if anything platform related should be used.

I like "puck" but being serious maybe a good one, suggested by Zelio, is WASL (Windows Automation and Scripting Language). Clean and nice if the pronunciation will be "weasel".

As you wish, WASL seems already used as domain, you will have to use www.wasl-something.org but the good point is that acronym is rarely used, else icon can be a fur ball as a sleeping weasel, minimized in tray menu that give a circle, and use color on it for pause/stop. Other good thing is that iceweasel is remplaced by icecat, so it is a free animal in open source world...

WASP or WASL == similar to WASD keys => common in gaming => hotkeys/keys/automation => AutoHotkey evolution

WASP is derogatory because of religion and too much used because of insect :(
WASD with D for desktop/development/ or others (english is not my language) ? But good idea it is in mindset of keyboard and hotkey for gamer.
Else, how you define AHK with only some words or a short phrase ?

edit: on french keyboard it is "zqsd", that why I needed a script to change two keys, and I found AHK long time ago... but I prefered to learn how to do auto-click :D

I personally like keeping AHK around for familiarity. Using AHK++ is nice since it keeps the connection to the original AHK and denotes incremental improvements to it.

Great idea. I've always though that both AHK and AutoHotkey aren't really good choices for names. I know that "Hotkeys" and "AutoIt" hold true to the applications history, but if a rebrand is to be done, we should really take the time and choose a name that fits the general expectations of our public. Instead of "automation", "programming" and "scripting", people actually look for "simplicity" and "power".

Keywords "My", "New", "Apps", "True" are examples of quite popular choices nowadays. They tend to catch to both simplicity and image - The later comes from the sucesses of Apple and other companies, which openly choose simple keywords like these. Unfortunately, most simple combinations of them are taken already. A few may still be available though:

- MyTrueApps
- EasyNewApps
- EasyTrueApps
- Apps4True
Etc.

Gio, could you probably elaborate on the term "Apps". I do not really see how a plural form makes sense in a languages name.
"I have written an EasyNewApps Script today."

Try harder.
That an actual re-branding happens is in no way certain and will be decided somewhere else. However, in this thread we assume the case of an actual change in the name.
