New notifications feature

06 Dec 2014, 23:10

Credits to vasili111 for the improved version of this guide!
Some of you may have noticed the new notifications area in the status bar:

Joedf and I have been working on this for quite some time and the outcome is really amazing.

It's purpose is basically to inform you about new activity in topics that you created, posted or subscribed. It automatically updates itself in the background, so you don't have to manually reload your topics pages all the time.

So how do I use it?

Every topic has a dedicated subscribe button. Click it to subscribe:

Image

To unsubscribe just click it again:

Image

Or, when you get a notification on a thread you don't care about, click one of the Image buttons.

Image

How to get automatically subscribed to my own topics and topics I reply to?

1. First of all click on the "new notifications" link on the top of the page.

Image

2. Click on "Posting settings" on popup overlay.

Image

3. Set "Notify me upon replies by default" to "Yes".

Image

How do I disable the email notifications?

1. Click on the "new notifications" link on the top of the page.

Image

2. Uncheck the "Emails" checkbox.

Image

How to manage the list of current subscriptions?

1. Click on the "new notifications" link on the top of the page:

Image

2. Click on "Manage subscriptions" on overlay menu:

Image

3. Check the checkboxes that you wish to Unsubscribe:

Image

4. Press "Unwatch marked":

Also I could not find the checkbox "Emails" in "new notifications" overlay menu. It has been removed or it is visible only in certain situations?

Edit:
"Emails" checkbox is only visible when user is on the page of the subscribed topic, right?

Great job! Do you want me to put it in the first post?

Joedf probably just did some testing which temporarely disabled the feature. For me it's visible everywhere.
Try to reload your browser using Ctrl+F5.

I think it is very useful future which will help not to miss activity in those threads that we are interested. Bruttosozialprodukt and Joedf have done really great job for creating that functionality for your forum!

You mean this wasn't a plugin taken from elsewhere, but it was developed by AHK staff? Holy cow! phpBB really needed this!

Put that mod at github. I think it will be useful for others too.

Huh?

The problem was that none of the notifications were listed. This continued happening until a new notification came in (your post). There were definitely new posts in my subscribed topics (I found them manually).

Ahh ok I figured it out. it's weird since it still works on the mobile version.
SyntaxError: JSON.parse: bad escaped character at line 1 column 185 of the JSON data Iixkb2N1bWV...:26
It is because i put a minified version of the js code. seems the minification must have caused some errors.
working on it now.

Nope, i was wrong. i found the issue... looks like there was a tiny exploit... :P
var NotifsServerSide_JSON = '[{"ti":"99","tlpt":"Jan 22 2015 07:55 AM","tt":"Test your Forum Posts","tlpn":"GeekDude","tlpi":"35542","tlpc":""},{"ti":"6050","tlpt":"Jan 22 2015 08:25 AM","tt":"A_DoubleClick (HKCU\Control Panel\Mouse\DoubleClickSpeed)","tlpn":"ekipan","tlpi":"35544","tlpc":""}]';
