Name is important, Community is what makes it work

01 Oct 2013, 01:07

wow. Forks are painful, but this one is worse than most I've travelled by. My sympathies for all those who've lived here (in the large sense) and built the community. The carving out of a new space is good to see, and a move towards some kind of foundation or other organizational structure to protect against future divisiveness is encouraging.

2c from someone on the outside: Go all the way and re-brand. New name, new domain, new everything. Let new hotness replace old and busted.

From what I've seen there's little to no hope of getting the old domain, and that's going to cause confusion for searchers and newbies for a long, long time if the names remain similar. (I found this site today quite by accident, while searching for help on the main/old site.) Given the acrimony present, you should allow the possibility the owner of that domain might feel inspired to present a fight as the community centre of mass moves away. All he'd have to do is fix a few graphic and css links and the place would look almost normal to most new visitors. Then what?

Keep the wordmark logo though. The keyboard buttons with [A] [H] [K] are distinctive, and allow many possibilities for alternate names.

domain: perhaps something phonetic, `ayaychkay.org`*, could be shortened to `aaychkay` or `aichkay`. Perhaps there's some other ideas along the same thread; how does one pronounce "h" in german?

Something a little wider afield but has great connotations in english and offers a bridge to the past is A-O-K ... "A-Okay". Most of those domain variants are being squatted (not all though), at least it's not by a hostile, admitting the possibility of acquisition.

* .org better than .com, to emphasize the intent to be larger than a single person or entity

-----

All talk of names aside, what really makes a place hum is relationship, people helping people. It doesn't matter a wit what the name on the doorplate is or well it's engraved, or heck if it's even legible, if those on the inside don't make it a place worth visiting. And that, my friends, you've got!

that has potential, a number of domain variants are readily available, and it's similar to the english Aha!, that moment when something is suddenly seen, found, or understood. Very much like the moment one's first AHK script actually works(!)

I'm also in favor for a name change, especially if we're talking about v2.
I remember some names that came up in the legendary but deleted thread by DrainX1 on the old forum: (some might be from IRC or myself.)

I dont really know why, but for some reason i don't like these phonetic names.
They look very strange...

I'd prefer the short name "AHK".
It also sounds more like a programming language imo.
Maybe one of those, budRich suggested.

We... including me would all be extatic if poly woke up today became active and started working the problems or letting soomeone else do it. This is and was a last resort. One that many of us talked about and resisted for quite a long time. There is so much damage I don't think it will be undone. Damage in the form of lost knowledge from numerous missteps including not having backups of the .net uploads. In the form of dismantling the wiki and now with the likelihood of all the lost knowledge from the forum. But even worse is the disrespect to Chris and the brand by forcing thru inaction. The unprofessional state that things have fallen to. New and old visitors are faced with a completely broken home.
That said, this domain is temporary till a permanant solution is found. There are some members trying to see if anything at all can be done by chris. A rebranding will be even more painfull but it may be time to rip the scab off

I wrote a longer reply, but here's the minimalistic version:

Polyethene owns and controls the domain.

I would be for a name change to a "good" name (but most suggestions are quite meh), but I won't propose it. I would also be for using the abbrevation AHK fully, and going for f.ex. http://ahkcode.com or similar.

I also like the community action.

Hi, by the way! :)

If there's still a chance accommodation can be made with Poly, then please do leave the door open. My suggestions came from the idea it was too late for that. As for the phonetic name route... they're just ideas. If they have no sticking power, let them slide right on by.

Either way collecting historical content together and providing a space for ongoing discussion, all in a portable form as possible, is definitely a worthy place to spend energy and attention.

I still think that it is necessary to somehow negotiate with Poly. Yes, I know of his attitude, but it is still worth a shot (look at what happened with the AHK_B vs AHK_L conflict). Especially since he hasn't actually said anything online about his plans or why is he neglecting the forums/AutoHotkey in general. Also, I wouldn't want AutoHotkey to get a name change (at most having "AHK" be made more prominent would be fine with me).

i aggree with AHK if a name change must come.
I have actually tried to get Poly to respond to me as well. the door will always be open
ahk.com is taken but ahk.org seems to be open

Any name change must have Lexikos approval. can we collect a list of the best candidates then we will need someone to look at available domains that match. once we have that narrowed down we can present some choices to Lexikos

I vote for AHK as a new name, but then I am partial.

It seemed the "hotkey" part of the brand was may be somewhat misleading and embarrassing to tell your employer what program you were were using. (a shame, really, as we know it is deceiving).

http://www.autohotkey.com/board/topic/8 ... ntry521954

It was dismissed.

It was Originally name as AutoHotkey, because it started out as a fork of AutoIt, with Hotkeys added, then the goal was also to maintain easy to write code.
And now...well.. AutoHotkey has evolved but, it has retained its name. :)
Should you change your name? :P ... joke..

When I was young I thought that HOTmail was a porn website :)

AHK is a always a french-german institution about commercial industries, don't select the AHK word alone.

It seems community want a foundation, don't rename it a lot, use acronyme for discard hot word, have a good phonetics, and keep "www"...
Therefore www.ahkfoundation.org or www.ahkcommunity.net or www.ahkscript.com seems the three best solutions, or pick both.
A lot of website have to use a different domain name than their application name, it is not a drama. Out of my opinion but it seems clear that most part of community want to stay on current thing with AHK 1.1, and we will still referenced by google with autohotkey and ahk, we will don't lost visibility but at price of confusion.

I always remember when my friend with poor spelling skills told me what he found at hotmale.com. Lol!

The AHK being used already is a weak argument.

Lastly, the domain name (and thus association and clarification) will of course play a part. I suggest an URL that emphasises the fact that AHK is a programming language, thus ahkcode or ahkscript seem fine.

odd, searching AHK on google, the first response it gives is www.autohotkey.com, followed by the original docs link, and fourth in the list is the wikipedia entry for it.

By the way, I updated the "Official website" link on the Wikipedia page to point to this domain.
