What do you think about that idea?
When speaking about a posted code,
referring to a line would be possible then.
Also, if you want to do a quick comparison of lines, you won't need to copy and paste the whole code.
Especially for mobile users it will be much easier
to tell the thread creator:
“there is a mistake in line 15“
rather then copying and modifying a line.
If it's not too difficult to implement,
I see only advantages in having line numbers.

The code boxes originally had line numbers and it was nearly unanimously requested to be removed

Well, that's a bit sad.
Having it as option inside of the user preferences
makes no sense either, if some turn it on, and others don't...
So it should be on/off for all.
