Is the controls toolbar editable? and if yes, how?
Particularly to add to remove existing buttons. (for me for example, loop option is particurlarly missing on this toolbar)

Right-click on it and choose customize or use the View menu to reset to a preset.

You cannot edit the controls toolbar, I misunderstood the question.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the toolbar. Unchecking the box does not do it.
It's driving me crazy it pops up in the middle of my work every time I run a macro which is several times per minute.
Any help would be much appreciated. Otherwise its great software.
