Workaround for Fudged-up Keyboard?

08 Aug 2020, 03:03

Hey all, so I bought a laptop from a friend who had neglected to mention that somehow he'd broken the keyboard (the ribbon to the motherboard I'm assuming) and so the ONLY number keys that work, are 5 and 6. The tilde (~), hyphen/underscore, and Function keys at the top all work correctly - just the 1,2,3,4,7,8,9 and 0 are D.O.A.

Wondering if any AHK Script Guru's on here could help with a solution? Say CAPS + Ctrl + Alt + Q would type the number '1' (with SHIFT inputting an exclamation point of course), and going along the top letter keys to substitute the other numbers? Obviously that's just an example, probably a bad one, but is SOMETHING similar possible? It has become so tedious calling up the OSK every time I need a digit, uncommon symbol, email address, etc. :O

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

James W

Code: Select all

	!a::Send, 1		; press Alt+a
	!s::Send, 2		; press Alt+s
	!d::Send, 3		; ...
	!f::Send, 4
	!g::Send, 5
	!y::Send, 6
	!x::Send, 7
	!c::Send, 8
	!v::Send, 9
	!b::Send, 0
BTW, knowing that only those specific numeric keys aren't working let me guess that there's a good chance that your keyboard offers whatever (yet unknown) option to switch off/on/toogle whatever of its functions, as most notebooks do. eg. https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht104902/ Or things like this ...
Why number keys are not working in laptop?
Some keyboard functions might stop working when accidently pressing and holding the Shift key or the Num Lock key for several seconds or when these keys are pressed several times. In Windows, search for and open Control Panel. ... In the Ease of Access Center, click Change how your keyboard works.

... or that: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02765720

To do a proper research regarding those proprietary keyboard settings it would help to know the exact brand + type of your nobo.

Good luck.

Dell Inspiron 5368 (Sorry, should have included that in OP lol)

But I have exhausted all other possibilities for why those keys dont work - and I might still be convinced otherwise except the 5 and 6 keys STILL work. The guy I got it from had butchered it admittedly, he took one of the memory boards out, swapped out the hdd, and a few other unspeakable things; so I know its either the keyboard itself, the ribbon/connector, or the connector on the motherboard he screwed up... (Why the 5 and 6 tho?? 😂)

Thanks again,

James
