e.g. side-effect is not a permitted search term.
side effect returns side and effect wherever they might appear in the resultant list of pages.

Not much help, but toggling off/on "Highlight Keywords" at bottom of search pane highlights the terms on the RHS if it is showing.
From experience HTMLHelp can be set up with full index search together with a stop-list and a "List Topics" button located on the Search tab. This provides whole word search and automatic boolean AND search for two or more words separated by a space. Non alpha-numerics are treated as literal.

Thanks, Highlight Keywords certainly makes it easier to identify hyphenated pairs.
