Why do people use imgur.com to host images posted in forum posts when those images may not be there 6 months from now?

From their wiki page If an image submitted by a user with a free account is not accessed at least once during a six-month period, it will be deleted

Why not use dropbox?

This is scary ... I have all my images on imgur.

To view stats like how many times an image has been viewed -

I was thinking more about viewing old posts and see the image gone and the original author of the post no longer active in the forum. Too bad there isn't a way the forum could host the picture.

Thanks very much, I had not explored attachments to forum messages before. This really should be the preferred method of attaching images.

I think a main reason is that imgur is easy, minimal ads, direct links and they have a wide support of countries (if not all). Other services restrict to just the UK or US or Europe+US and nowhere else.
Things like Dropbox, afaik, require your pc to be on at all times for others to access and view the files.
There are also permanent hosts (some free, some not) like http://www.solidfiles.com/ that are a good alternative, but not as simple as a free, no signup "forever unless inactive" host.

I use dropbox and the files are hosted on their servers with no need for my PC to stay on. They say as long as your account is active the files will be there. Attaching files to the post seems the best.

What about Copy (referral link) ? Offers more space than Dropbox (easy 20 gb) and supports direct linking (a tricky one though) .

No but the Google Index ranking of a Pancake site , how effectively that site can be searched in Google .

still i dont know how googles sees it... but im sure that it's better than a blogger site

I too believe it should be OK, pancake is a new service and will take time to pick up.

Yup, I have seen many articles pointing towards the fact that wordpress site has better google reach than their own Blogger.
Besides, using services like blogger and wordpress keeps you away from the some of the coolest parts of HTML , the relative-linking, realtime-updating webpages, <head> tags and many else.

Yup! and that's why i use pancake: you can use markdown syntax or just use your own custom html. sadly, no php

but for that i just host it on a free service.. like 3owl.com or SourceForge.net
